Mon, 6-13, Red Flag Fire Warning--Western OK

The NWS has issued a Red Flag Fire Warning for noon through 8 p.m. today for some counties in western Oklahoma and portions of western north Texas.

With the very high temperatures, low RHs and gusty winds forecast for today, any fires that do start have the potential to spread very quickly.

You can click on the link below to see the affected counties highlighted in hot pink. Click on any county to read the specific forecast, including the text of the fire warning, for that county.

Even if you are not in the Red Flag Fire Warning area, today's wind combined with drought conditions where applicable, make the fire risk somewhat higher than usual for all of us. Please do not think that your area is safe if a little rain has fallen there in the last week or so. If you have dry vegetation, the fire risk remains high even if the ground is muddy.

Finally, please note the graphic and text on the webpage under the title "Fire Update". There is a potential this afternoon for thunderstorms in parts of western Oklahoma that could be accompanied by lightning. The lighting can occur even in the absence of rainfall and often this "dry lightning" sparks wildfires. This has happened a lot in drought-plagued Texas this year where the 'storms' have brought more fire instead of fire relief.
