Pygmy Date Palm - How to Prune the Dead Stuff?
Comments (3)Step #1 - Get someone else to prune them. Step #2 - Okay, that failed. You can cut everything but the new growth if you so desire. They will eventually come back full. Never cut a frond in half, either leave it or cut it off in its entirety. Wear gloves and a sweatshirt. Watch out for the spines and keep watch for Io caterpillars - green with a red and white racing stripe - the love to chew on the underside of Roebellinii fronds and they have a nasty sting....See MoreNew to Indoor Palms (have a Pygmy Date Palm)
Comments (3)My pygmy date palm has been in my living room for 2 years. I DO notice it has a nasty habit of collecting dust and being difficult to keep clean - the best way for me was to give it a day outside once in a while and hit it with the hose on a light spray. It has grown VERY slowly but leaves turning brown has been a continuing problem. I have had a wonderful experience with my spindle palm as an indoor palm - even in relatively low light areas. It continues to grow indoors, although very slowly - and is beautiful, majestic-looking, and the leaves stay nicely green for a long time. I find they aren't easy to find, but if you find one, a spindle palm has worked out great for me. btw good call on the majesty palm. They don't really like being indoors - although there is no way one would grow very fast indoors. Good part about majesty palms is they are disposably-priced :)...See MorePygmy Date Palm
Comments (4)ekoboat. We have a couple Robies. One stays in the house and the other in the greenhouse that we errect each late fall. The one in the greenhouse see temps as low as 4C(39.2F) and does OK. But while they may be able to take the odd freezing temps, they cannot survive with freezing temps for very long. It will weaken and kill them. Like was said, you would need to build a heated structure around it. But the good news is, those palms will grow pretty big in pots.... so you could just do that if not interested in a structure....See MoreRequest help for my pygmy date palm
Comments (5)Is that snow on the ground! In any case, your palm is being stunted by the Winter cold. The pygmy date is one of the more tropical species of Phoenix (date) palms--other species (P. canariensis for example) show greater cold tolerance. Your palm would soon grow out of this stunted growth and revert to a normal growth rate/pattern BUT as you say, it will go through another setback with the coming winter. Frankly, I would grow it as a containerized palm and just Winter protect it somewhere (house or garage). The condition you described happened last year to my pygmy date. It suffered two Winters ago as a containerized palm in the garage. It showed stunted, slow abnormal growth last Summer. This Spring it grew out of it and grew like crazy and a few weeks ago it flowered. In its place I would suggest you plant a cold hardier palm. Here are some suggestions: Trachycarpus (Windmill palms), Sabal louisiana, Butia capitata (Pindo palm), Rhaphidophyllum (Needle palms), or Chamaerops humilis (Mediterranean fan)....See MoreArizona-Willie
