None. Every time I come across another gardening forum, the content is so miniscule and the activity is so much less compared to GW that I don't bother.

Would be open to visiting another site if anyone knows of a good one, however. I just haven't found one myself.

I use UConn's plant database sometimes to find info on shrubs or trees, but their list is limited. New England Wildflower Society and CT Botanical Society have informative websites.

Because many plants are useful over a wide range of hardiness zones, information from more general websites is usually applicable to New England as well. Also, soil and other growing conditions can vary quite a lot even within New England. I use websites from all over the world for information on plants and garden design.

I check all the hort/garden organizations' websites--Arnold Arboretum, Mass Hort, Tower Hill, NEWFS, etc etc. But there is only one GardenWeb. But am open to hearing of others if they are out there.

I enjoy the Arnold Arboretum and the NEWFS site as well. NEWFS has great sales for native plants and seeds. Arnold has a once a year sale.

bostongardens.com is a good resource for local events etc.

I usually use my search engine for a specific plant, etc. for general information, but I come here to check with this forum for a variety of answers as YOU all grow the plants and I can benefit from a large, first hand base.

For info on what public and private gardens to visit in a particular state (New England or other), the link below is great! (I can't take the credit for finding this one - saw it mentioned in another gardenweb forum). Just select the state on the left hand side of the home page.

What about on-line sources for vegetable seeds. I get so many catalogs that I am overwhelmed! I have used Southern Exposure Seed Exchange and Totally Tomatoes.
Is there any benefit to buying from local companies? Would they be more likely to sell only varieties appropriate for the surrounding area? For instance, I don't see Vermont Bean Seed Co. offering okra seeds.... BTW, I'm near New Haven, CT

scargod, Not all local companies specialize in appropriate-to-region, but some do. The best have extensive trial gardens so they actually know how things grow in in our climate.

For the Northeast, my favorite is Fedco: honest evaluation ("may not mature in short-season areas"), not the hype of some where everything is "the best". Excellent prices and dedicated to sustainable growing. Great people and service.

Here is one I think someone here at GW recommended a year or so ago and it is a humdinger, in my opinion. www.visitnewengland.com On the left side of the screen, scroll down to "Gardens". There is a lengthy, detailed list of many, many New England gardens to visit, complete with links, maps etc. This is the best site for this info I have ever seen. I'm sure someone more clever than I can post the direct link to the garden segment. (There are also tons of ideas for other things to see and do in New England on this site.)

Thanks for the advice and links. I think I will wander over to Edgerton Park today and see what's being planted and seek advice. They are very close.

I have some okra coming up in my seedlings, in my window. I guess I'll only know if they'll make if I try it.

Another source I like for gardening info that at least feels like it applies is from a garden blog - Kathy Purdy's Cold climate gardening. She posts on tons of different topics which I usually find informative, and feel applies to my climate here in NH. Sorry I don't have a link, but I think you should be able to find it fairly easily using a search engine and the description above if interested.

scargod, every year i direct-sow one batch of okra seeds too early & kill them off, then the second batch usually works.

i wouldn't advise this method, but keep trying if your first batch croaks because okra is yummy!
