Holiday Gifts for Gardeners

Since this magazine is a favorite of many on this forum, I thought I'd mention that People, Places, and Plants Magazine is running a special for gift subscriptions 2 for the price of 1. See the link below.

So does anyone have any interesting gifts they are planning to give this year that are garden related?

The most interesting garden gift I received last year--hard to find but a great gift--was an amaryllis forcing vase. I had wanted one for a long time and my SIL searched high and low for it. I like to give bulbs of various kinds for forcing, especially for people who have everything. I'll be paying attention to this thread for some new ideas.

I am going to be asking for a book which I am tired of checking out of the library so often [g]...

The Well Tended Perennial Garden by Tracey DiSabato.

Oh there are so many things. A few that I like to receive and give are: 1) Herb Books, including Herbal Cookbooks; 2) Herb Magazine subscriptions; 3) Herbs, seeds and clippings; 4) Gardening gloves and tools; 5) Pots and potting soil; 6) Membership to the American Herb Society or any local botanical garden; 7) Herbal Teas with a nice tea cup; 8) Herbal Soaps, Bath Salts, lotions, candles, etc.; 9) Hand made herbal blends for teas, cooking and/or baths; Herbal vinegars, oils and butters; . . .and the list can go on and on! And it's always helpful to provide information with the gift on how to use it. Lots of people out there are afraid of herbs because they don't know how to use them. Happy Winter Holidays!

Amy, I'm frustrated and I'm venting. I thought he was being nervy. I think any divorced parent would be lucky to have their former spouse pick them out a gift that is expensive (over $10) and thoughtful. If you consider the gifts most of us gave our parents, they were tacky, lopsided and still sticky. When did this become necessary for me to make a trip to the mall for him? I'm just a little offended by your presumption that I would encourage my daughter in a nasty way to make/buy something mean for her dad, whom she loves very much. *snicker snicker, here honey, make this for your dad* As I stated in my post, I have already purchased a t-shirt for him, after discussing it prior with my daughter. She approved and the t-shirt was bought (four weeks ago). I think everyone was just having a bit of fun and empathizing with me rather than advising me to encourage my daughter to give him something inappropriate. And, on another note, I think the duct tape wallets are really cute, and totally appropriate for a child to make for a father. (not a six year old, the tape is too sticky, but would be great for a ten year old) If I let her go to the store, dollar store or big bin store or even a department store, unless I guided her into the mens section she would think nothing of picking him out a barbie or sponge bob wallet and thinking it was super cool and that dad would love it. What kid wouldn't? Is it my responsibility to guide her to the right section, guide her on how many pockets/tooling/shape it should have, and buy it and wrap it and mail it? Isn't this a little extreme to you? Now, if she were to say, I want to buy Dad a wallet, and it should look like this, I would think nothing of helping her buy it. But the kid has no clue. What do you think, ladies? Do I set her free in the kids department, or do I guide her and influence her decision?

We did not do much in the way of gifts this year but we did go to my neighbors home for Christmas dinner and we always exchange gifts. She has no family to buy for other than her husband and her dogs so she has started showering us with Christmas gifts because she enjoys it so much. I try to reciprocate. She is an avid gardener and works in my yard all the time. She often gets into poison ivy. I got her the very best quality leather gauntlet gardening gloves I could find in her tiny hand size. She was so thrilled. She said oh my God no more poison ivy on my wrist. I also bought them a Cajun pork Tenderloin wrapped in bacon and stuffed with cream cheese and jalapeños. She cooked it for their new years eve meal last night and said it might be the best thing they have had. That made me happy.

Going on the theme of bulb forcing, last year I found that Russells Garden Center in Wayland and Cataldos Nursery in Littleton carried inexpensive hyacinth forcing vases in different colors. I ended up having a few of these vases and hyacinth bulbs on hand for last minute gifts which worked well. Also Russells has a great selection of amaryllis bulbs (some unusual types).

Yes Prairie good idea. I also like the Well Tended Perennial Garden book. A great idea for both someone new to gardening and experienced. A rare book that is valuable to both audiences. I too have a few books on my list. One I've taken out a few times from the library is:

Gardens to Go: Creating and Designing a Container Garden by Sydney Eddison and Steve Silk

The book has such beautiful photos and is a great treat to look at time and time again.

On the more frivolous side, I can see wearing these going out in the snow to pick up the mail (not to mention sloshing around in spring mud).

Claire - I like those boots!! alas I wear wide width shoes so I am severely limited to what I can buy for myself. Gardeners Supply has some interesting gardening gift ideas however.

So just a heads up to anyone looking for a neat container gardening book with many lovely photos. A book I got for Christmas this year (finally after checking it out of the library so much) is now bargain priced on Amazon.com for $15. Check it out....

She is speaking on container gardens in the Greater Boston area several times this winter. I like her books tho I don't have this one. She says as she gets older, she must cut back on in-the-ground gardening somewhat and containers are a good option.
