The other location post is getting long but i enjoyed rereading it. So chime in either post.

Well..I'm sort of a "mislocated" Ozarker at the moment, but I'll always have the Ozarks in my heart....I'm in Guam right now, but I'm checking up on you guys...so watch out!

We moved to Pomona (Howell County, MO) from Wisconsin the end of last September. We're on 3 acres of pasture with beautiful, huge oaks and hickory trees. I'm a Wisconsin Master Gardener but we didn't have a chapter on rocks! I've decided to befriend them rather than fight them and am making a huge rock garden bed in part of the yard. I'm starting from scratch so would appreciate any "extras, thinnings, etc." anyone in my area might have. I came with two hostas, two day lillies, a couple of Iris corms, a bunch of daffodil bulbs and not much more.

Yes Lou, I had seen the picture of the very thin lobes. It's certainly worth grafting to see if it maintains. These kind of sprouts (witches brooms) aren't all all uncommon, and they can be due to many things. Mutation is one possibility, but there are viruses, bacteria, chemicals, and even some insects can cause these. Examples of altered growth such as this are galls produced on Oak leaves by a wasp, tulips that are a marbled mottle coloration is due to a virus and not a mutation at all, tomatoes get very think and wide leaves upon almost any chemical exposure. So it's too soon to call it a mutation IMHO, and certainly can't tell if it's stable. If in fact it ends up being stable, then could be a good candidate for producing light shade in areas where you would not want dense shade. So have you seen the thin leaves yourself? I saw where he said it was on 'Golden Dragon', and it would be nice if it retains the same intense gold coloration in fall. Arktrees

I'm so very sorry for your bad experiences. i hope that what i'm going to say, you take in the same way i'm meaning it. i think perhaps, being from the city, the dreams you had just couldnt be lived up to, you just had everything dumped on you at once --and you didnt have time to "kinda" slip into reality. the garden, well you either pick up rocks, live with them, or do as i do, and build raised beds. the fleas?well, from experience, you moved into a place that had been over run with fleas, then the people and animals moved out--leaving the fleas lying in wait--for you.solution, have the place exterminated a month or so before you move in--and put advantage flea control on the Shih-Tzus. cause i can tell you, fleas just love the tender skin on those babies! I love Shih Tzus. the big dogs barking? well, they were just doing what they thought they should--protect and warn you of all the beasties in the woods. the local electric co sells lightening protection for houses.(dont you just love that word? sell? and, if you're from the city, you dont realize that some of us have only had bathrooms inside for last 20 or so years--and some still dont? Clampetts dont have a thing on us--lol The paved roads? forget, most of us really dont want to live on a paved road, we'd like to--just really adds to traffic going by--which we really dont want. the heat and humidity would probably be hardest for you to get used to--but thats what you have to do, sorry--its still better here that further south. Jobs? that the biggie--jobs are scarce in this area, seems unless you're in the medical field--or want to settle for fast food, or factory. I'm again sorry, but i'm afraid your first try just couldnt live up to the dream you had built in your head.but--now that your dreams are scaled back a bit, care to give it another try, understanding the reality? make friends, talk to others about the problems--and try to adapt. i bet in a few years, you'd say my dream was here all the time. oldtimer in the ozarks

Thanks for the Welcome! I've been pretty busy taking cuttings and getting rid of the Mother plants. WOW that sounds bad! but gotta make room for all the seedlings. Got a few tomato plants started, yellow pear, cherry and a Hybrid of my own that I think is a cross between a grape and roma that has all the meat and twice as sweet, lol, along with some Painted Tongue, Johnny jump up, Purple Majesty Millet, Morning Glory, Cypress vine, Canna and many Caladium, Alocasia, Colacasia and Canna bulbs. Also managed to propagate a few Coleus, Flame vine, Impatiens, Vitex and Passiflora incarnata and still have many seeds and bulbs to plant. I would take some pictures now but everyone would think I'm a slob. It's impossible to clean house with this many plants and two Persian cats. I can't wait to get all these plants on the deck and in the ground so I can clean house.

Sharbear50 - we have friends in Bella Vista!!! I have to confess that the grunt work on these projects was done by someone else. I'm in my 70's and there is no way my body would let me do any of this. The fountain has an interesting back story. At the close of my professional life, I was a self-employed web site designer. I did a site for a fellow who installed fountains and ponds and, due to his circumstances, never got paid. After several years, I simply wrote off the debt. Then, out of the blue, I got a call from him. Seems he got "religion" and wanted to compensate me for my work. He asked if I would like a pond or fountain installed at his expense. I leaped at the opportunity. He traveled more than 600 miles, and spent three very hot days here, digging the hole for the tank, installing the fountain, etc. We did put him up and feed him, but he worked like a mule! In the end, we were both very happy with the results.

Ah yes...the rocks! You have the right attitude, Connie! Hard work, but when you start working with them in your garden, they start to grow on you...What else are you going to do with them?

It keeps gardening interesting.....

Welcome Connie! You have the right idea. You'd be fighting a losing battle if you tried to remove them all. Just dump some good compost on top and garden away. At least you'll have good drainage. lol There's a rock nearly as big as I am beside my shed that I attempted to dig out a few years ago. It's still there of course. I just planted iris on top of it since they're shallow rooted.
You must've left behind a lot of plants. If you email me, I can send you at least a couple plants this spring assuming they live through the winter. - Christie

Connie, want Surprise Lily bulbs? I will be digging in May. I will send them for the postage. a dozen big bulbs costs about $10 to ship to central Ar.

Connie, I built rock flowerbeds everywhere.and 4'high small fences, use them to mark trees and shrubs i want to keep and still find rocks. I can come up with something for you later too.
