New to Ozark Region Gardening

Hi y'all!

My name is John and new to this forum. I've been on GW for about a year and just found y'all from my neck of the woods. My first post was on Butterfield Stage as I live on Butterfield Coach Rd. I've had basic veggie gardens for years but due to becoming disabled, I've had to do something with all this time and little mobility so last year I started growing all sorts of plants and now I have the BUG. I grew Cannas, Coleus, Celosia, Caladiums, Purple majesty millet, Blue vitex, Scarlet sage, Aloe vera, Alocasia, Colacasia, Snapdragons and morning glorys just to name a few along with several types of carnivorous plants last year and have managed to keep many of the more tropicals alive through the winter'so far'. My temperate carnivorous plants are sleeping in the crisper drawer of the frige. I live by myself in a one br house and it is wall to wall with plants with a narrow walkway through the house. Last year I said I would not do this again but I have once again underestimated germination rate and just can't throw them out. When spring gets here(soon I hope) I will plant what I have room for and give away and/or sell the rest. I sold about half of the extras last year at a garage sale my friend had and I think the colors brought business in for them also. It seemed like people flocked in after I brought the plants over. We'll be doing the same this year and I might have a couple yard sales myself also. Anyway I just wanted to introduce myself and hope to hear about your experiences and share mine here in the Ozarks. We moved to Pomona (Howell County, MO) from Wisconsin the end of last September. We're on 3 acres of pasture with beautiful, huge oaks and hickory trees. I'm a Wisconsin Master Gardener but we didn't have a chapter on rocks! I've decided to befriend them rather than fight them and am making a huge rock garden bed in part of the yard. I'm starting from scratch so would appreciate any "extras, thinnings, etc." anyone in my area might have. I enjoyed reading the replies and updates. I loved your report gldno1. My cucumbers are doing great for a change. I switched to "Little Leaf". I'm harvesting daily right now and throwing them in a 10% brine. This allows me to collect for a couple of weeks. My Shallots and Garlic did OK but, like yours, not as good as last year. My pole beans are on my hoop house, runners are up to the shed roof, bush beans are in raised beds. They ALL suck this year. NO BEANS! I even made a second planting. The little buggers are stuck about 3" high. Been that way for a couple of weeks. Broccoli is kind of funny. I'm growing purple sprouting for the first time. I started it in February. By mid June I'm wondering what's wrong. No heads. Hmmmmm. The broccoli is now as tall as me. No exaggeration! I did some research via Google. One site, out of a hundred different sites that sell what I have, mentions this broccoli takes all year to develop. We'll see....... Three plantings of Zucchini have all failed. I just planted again with house started plants. Sunny mentions lettuce. I got so frustrated I replanted all my lettuce in giant flower pots. It worked. I was able to keep it in the shade under the oak trees. My melons are about like yours Christie. But unlike you, and unlike any other garden in human history, I can't grow any dill this year. How weird is that? I'm usually pulling it like weeds. I planted my bulb fennel in giant pots this year so I could drag it around to cooler spots when necessary. Right now it has baby Swallowtail butterflies (caterpillars) keeping the tops trimmed. The numbers are dwindling so I think the birds like them too. Unlike other years, I've only seen and murdered one Japanese beetle. Sounds like they are all visiting Missouri! I don't have gaggles of Harlequin bugs this year either. I did have to pick off Asparagus beetles daily for a few weeks. They seem to be gone now. I used some of that nematode stuff for slugs late Spring. I don't know if it's a coincidence or if the stuff really works. I haven't seen a single slug since a few days after I drenched with the nematodes. They usually line up to eat all my seedlings. This is a bad year for flea beetles. I haven't found a way to deal with them except to plant eggplant for them to destroy. I'd love ideas on dealing with these little nasties. 1. I've an abundance of standing oaktrees that need to be thined.I'd like to use them for my bedwalls. Any pest/fungal problems that would make this unadvisable? So long as there are not pre-existing issues, oak is a great choice. 2. where can I find a root depth requirement (so I know how tall to build my beds) per vegetable plant species. Where do I find what seed varieties work best in my area.I've gardened for years and my choice of seed is usually determined by how good the seed company's ad is.....Not all ways a good choice. Everyone around here has their own opinions, and everyone row grows...I'll be the first around here to try sq/ft container growing. Root Depth: Minimum 6 inches of soil is required. A foot would be better. And you can go higher from there to waist high - but your cost goes up in materials and growing medium. The best resource you can get for square foot gardening is the book called Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew, it's less than $20 (maybe even less than $15) and jam packed with everything you need to know and photos. Varieties of vegetables? What vegetables specifically are you wanting t grow? 3. Does anyone know how deep a bed has to be to keep earthworms alive and happy?I heard about some folks that offer weekend gardening classes.any and all advice is appreciated... Thanks. With your hostas - I'm guessing that they will need more shade in Arkansas than where you are now since you would be farther south. You probably know that some trees are better to garden under than others. Hopefully you can find land with some deep-rooted trees like oak. I would not be embarrassed to take a shovel along before I made my final decision so you can see what the ground is like. We had to blast when we built our walk-out basement home but the neighbors on each side of us didn't. We hit solid limestone and after a few days of blasting, we decided it was deep enough. The equipment is expensive and if I'm not mistaken, some places you're not allowed to blast. You have to use other methods which might be even more expensive. If you're set on having a berm home, you may want to talk to a builder in that area to see what their experience has been. Have a happy Thanksgiving and let us know how your trip goes.

Since you're short on space indoors, you may also want to check out the Winter Sowing forum for starting seeds outside. I'll link you to a brief description of winter sowing that's on their FAQ page. It's a good way to use up extra seeds.

SWMO Your Coleus are beautiful. I have a couple pots on a shelf in a bathroom in front of a frosted window. Not nearly enough light but at least they lived. The ones I kept in the bright light on the glassed porch last winter succumbed to the cold and died. Now that it's warmer, these are going out where I hope they color up and get bushier.

Welcome to the group, John. I stop in nearly every day but don't necessarily post too often. I know how you feel, I hate to see my babies freeze in the winter. I have a bunch in every window. I've been talking to them every day and tell them hold on. It won't be long now. Even if I have lost a few of them. I have all my winter sown jugs on the deck waiting for sprouts. Garages are fun and I am getting tired of wait on them too. Kathy

Thanks for the Welcome! I've been pretty busy taking cuttings and getting rid of the Mother plants. WOW that sounds bad! but gotta make room for all the seedlings. Got a few tomato plants started, yellow pear, cherry and a Hybrid of my own that I think is a cross between a grape and roma that has all the meat and twice as sweet, lol, along with some Painted Tongue, Johnny jump up, Purple Majesty Millet, Morning Glory, Cypress vine, Canna and many Caladium, Alocasia, Colacasia and Canna bulbs. Also managed to propagate a few Coleus, Flame vine, Impatiens, Vitex and Passiflora incarnata and still have many seeds and bulbs to plant. I would take some pictures now but everyone would think I'm a slob. It's impossible to clean house with this many plants and two Persian cats. I can't wait to get all these plants on the deck and in the ground so I can clean house.

Oh, John, Gardeners usually are slobs. Gardening is fun; housecleaning is not, so guess where we spend our time. And for you gardeners who are also good housekeepers, I apologize for painting all with one brush. I'm speaking for myself, y'know
