be careful black ice on concrete steps!

Water is dripping off my roof making it appear like ice is melting but my steps in the shade are slick. Be careful it is deceptive.

I hope you didn't fall Helen. I came close to falling this week at Dollar General in the same situation. The water was dripping off the roof but frozen on the sidewalk below where it was shaded. The parking lot was wet so I didn't expect the sidewalk to have ice when I stepped up. It just looked wet. My feet slid out two different directions and I don't know how I didn't end up on my backside.

I DID fall on a grocery store parking lot once but there wasn't ice, just a little puddle of oil where a car had been parked that was leaking. The lot was slopped there and I went down with my arms full of groceries. It didn't hurt me. Thank goodness there was no Youtube back then. lol I learned to watch for oil. It's as slick as ice.

Recommended on the Container Forum here, in 2009 I bought some Oil Dry at Sam's Club to use in a special potting mix, as a replacement for Turface, which is hard to find. Oil Dry is used in garages to soak up oil spills and does a good job. Looks just like kitty litter and has no odor properties, as it's pure clay. It was ridiculously inexpensive for such a large bag --much less than litter. We had been using the ice melt product for years and it had affected the mortar on the steps and concrete on the driveway to the extent I had to have all the bricks and mortar redone last summer.

I throw it down on the steps before and after snow/ice and it gives me good traction. You could use kitty litter, but this big bag will last you for years and years.

I met with another GC (a very good friend who does only large projects) yesterday who agreed with all of you that we need to bite the bullet and rework all but two of the seven steps so that they are of equal height. He liked the longer landings rather than lots of stairs bc of the curve, because this is outdoors and esp since we don't want railings. He advised that lower riser heights of 6 1/4 inches are better for natural gait when you have longer treads in between. So, out of the seven steps we currently have, we will eliminate one in the middle completely, keep the existing 6 1/4" riser at the top and the existing 6 1/4 " at the bottom and install a series of 2 double risers 6 1/4 high by 14" in between with landings. We will have to regrade a little, especially the 10 feet of the final part of this walkway (before the final step onto the firepit patio) to raise it up 3 inches, but it can be done with a shovel. He said he's doing lots of concrete + brick walkways and patios and saw nothing wrong with my original idea (copied from Houzz - in case you guys don't know that web site, it has thousands of photos for everything to do with residential design) of brick borders with concrete in the middle. He did advise me to match the depth of the concrete middles to follow the same lines all the way up, which hadn't occurred to me. I've managed to get $400 back from the first contractor who did the original steps (it really should be more, but my friend told me do NOT try to get these first guys to come back and do a better job. He said they clearly did not know what they were doing) and my OTHER landscaping contractor who built the firepit patio and retaining wall said he will fix it on the weekends for $600 provided I pay for materials. At this point, the only materials I need are bags of concrete and some more crusher run for raising the base of the 10' walkway. If you have suggestions, please feel free to detail them. If you are merely going to be critical or caustic, please don't bother. I could probably stick those solar lights in the ground for now to give us some lights along these steps.

An update....we are working every chance we get, weather permitting, to get the yard cleaned up. Nolon cuts out the firewood, and I drag the remaining limbs and twigs to one of the several piles around the perimeter of our yard. I keep discovering more breakage that we had missed before. It was a strange thing....many limbs split open, but did not break off. At the One Stop we talked to a couple that lives a few miles from us. He is the same age as I (She probably is too). They have lived here all their lives, but said they never saw anything like the breakage from that storm. They have a large farm, and are busy fixing fences that were downed by falled trees and limbs.(He is Nolon's barber.) I think part of the problem is that it had been unseasonably warm, and the sap was up. And talking about sap, the ends of the broken trunks on the river birch are 'bleeding' vigoriously, and have long icicles hanging down, on cold days. I way be weird, but I ate several of the sap icicles today. They have no didtinctive flavor. :-) I cleaned the debris from the base of the honey locust at the end of the house. The dafodils at it's base are getting ready to bloom! The Cornelian cherry is starting to bloom, too.

IMHO ... in my neck of the woods... winter is the driest season .. all the water is caught in the frozen ground or in snow/ice .... so young plants .. that do not have roots down into mother earth .. can desiccate severely ... maturity and a good root mass lessens it all ... winter sun.. on tree that does not have the root mass ... can increase the water loss and the tree can not replace what is lost from the leaves since the roots are frozen/inactive .... an extremely mild fall with an extreme cold snap ... like 60's to zero in a week ... plants that are woody .. that still have lush green growth.. will show tip damage ... a black pot on a zero degree day with full sun ... might just thaw .... as an extreme example ... then in the ice zone.. how do you water a pot that is frozen solid.. without creating an ice cube ... you are on the right track trying to isolate all the variables.. but unless one of us lives in NM .. i don't know how we can really give you answers.. we can debate the variables .... but i personally cant tell you which are irrelevant .... plants only need 5 things ... hope i can remember them: LIGHT WATER MEDIUM NUTRIENTS TEMPERATURE ... master each of these for what you are doing.. and you will be successful ... miss one ... well ... good luck for new grafts my personal opinion on each: LIGHT .. reduced... depending on root maturity.. most new grafts are on seedling stock that was transplanted within the year of grafting .... so it may already be stressed ... and then they go grafting a new piece on by slicing the bark .. etc ... grow the roots and the plant will follow ... burn it all in too much sun.. they die ... WATER ... conifers like water to drain fast .. most do not like wet feet .. high peat content can mess you up.. add large bits of something to increase drainage.... study every pot you can get your hands on see what the supplier used.. and for what purpose ... up north .. plants don't live in ice cubes ... deal with it if pots freeze MEDIUM .. see above .. its all about water retention and more importantly.. DRAINAGE ... NUTRIENTS .. conifers don't need any ... unless in the second or third year of being in the same pot.. if you change the medium .. then you don't need anything else ... a little diluted water soluble.. isn't going to hurt anything.. early in the season.. no fert after 7/1 in my z5 ... we want them going 'down' toward winter.. not putting out explosive growth ... TEMPERATURE ... if zone appropriate stock.. irrelevant.. if you are zone pushing.. think about your micro climates ... and think about winter wind and sun .. and frankly all of the above ... if you are going to get a killing frost in spring... the bigger your garden.. the less you can do .... chin up.. let ma nature take her best shot.. and then complain .... any better???? always fall back to the 5 basic things.. and try your best to deal with them .... now how would you deal with the 5 themes in z7 NM???? ken

This really bothers me in a couple of ways. I have had a close relationship with various aspects of law enforcement from crime prevention, police support, private investigations and more. Several things here don't sit well with me. Regardless, a few things come to mind that could complicate things... Many areas do require a license but not all, so of course check that out. Let's say they are required to be licensed. Unless someone sees him selling something, there's no violation. Now naturally, the question then would be what he's doing if he's not legitimate, but I simply raise the complication. It would be strange to be selling drugs or something from an ice cream truck, but hey, sometimes they can get imaginative. Again you need to see who is buying and what they're buying. Let's face it if he's dealing drugs in your neighborhood, there's a market in your neighborhood. So even if you get rid of him, the buyers are still there. Now with all of that, you would run the risk of a potential stalking charge if you follow them around too much, so you have to be careful. It can't be that difficult to get the license plate number and give it to the police and tell them your apprehensions. They can check on licensing and the like. If you're absolutely sure it's the same guy, and if the guy owns the vehicle in his name, it wouldn't be tough to check the background on him. Keep in mind that the police need help. You won't be able to call 911 and say he's driving down the street, come check him out... since he'd be long gone by the time they'd get there. Police may well not be able to come out for hours or even days on such a report if there's other things occupying them. Now, let's also be fair here. You said you don't like him because you saw him "arrested". You have no idea why he was arrested and I suspect your imagination is running wild with thoughts of why he was arrested. Could it be something serious? Could it be it was a driving offense? Could it be it was for overdue library books? Expired tabs? Could it be a false charge? Could it be an accident and he mouthed off to the cop? Do you know for sure he was actually arrested and not something like being brought in for questioning or something? Just how are you planning to "scare him off"? That has me concerned. And you don't want to be the snitch, but does this mean you know something more than you're saying? For everyone's well-being, I'd suggest some investigation before looking for a rope, a horse and a tree. I've seen peoples' lives affected and nearly destroyed by vicious rumors and unfounded allegations. I've seen people have to move because of it. I get very apprehensive when things like this happen. If there's TRULY something wrong there, then stand up, be the snitch or whatever. But also, be sure of what you charge, please.

Thanks Sunny I'll look for that. I have looked for Turface before. Ridiculously inexpensive sounds good. How did it work out in your potting soil. I am afraid I would use it up for that. Christie I'm glad you weren't hurt.

Well, I never used it in a potting mix -- you also had to have odd things for it, plus thoroughly soaked "pine fines" and I sort of dropped the ball. Someone thought Oil Dry wouldn't hold up over time like Turface does, but who knows?? It sure holds up over snow/ice--

Helen, let us know when/if you make "Al's Mix" -- people swear by it.

I made a mix with pine bark fines, peat, perlite but the micronutrients part confused me and I don't think I added much lime. I don't know if that is the Al's mix but it was Al's recipe. The lime I had was pelleted. For fertilizer I used Tone's and some osmocote. It looked good but it is hard to compare pots. I do such a variety of things and have no memory. One time in winter I was out of potting mix and Wal - Mart and Lowe's had theirs shrink wrapped or frozen solid. I used some coarse sand from the creek and a mixture of odds and ends. My coleus cutting grew like mad. coleus like moisture but it doesn't want soggy. I will never repeat that because I don't remember exactly what I did.

i use a somewhat modified 5 1 1 mix by al for container plants. we don't have pine bark fines readily available but sta green at lowe's has a tree/ bush mix that is 60- 65 % fines plus a little peat mixed in. i doubled the perlite amount in al's recipe. i had more pepper plants/ fruits then i could give away. bet the gritty mix is even better.

Thanks william. I couldn't find the pine bark fines again. I got a bunch at Wal-Mart on sale and it was so old the plastic on the bags was rotten. It was heavy full of water and hard for the boy to load. I never did find that brand again. I will look for the sta green. I am not happy with the Expert mix I used to get at Wal-Mart. It is now in 1.5 cubic foot bags instead of 2 for the same price. Also sometimes there are big splinters of wood products in some potting mix. What did you use for fertilizer; did you find the micronutrients Al uses?

sorry to get off topic with sunny's original post but it is slow and winter is here.

helen- sta green has different mixes. get the tree and shrub mix. comes in a green bag and i think the bag is about 7 bucks and it is 2.2 cubic feet. good pricing and a good amount. i used a 3 1 2 fertilizer and i think mg is just that. lowes also carries the micronutients. they come in different names and packages. just read the label. they are in the same section as the displayed fertilizer areas.
this mix really drains.

be aware that the seed racks went up in walmart here yesterday. let the fun begin.

William do you have an Atwood's there? I have already hit the seed racks and the catalogs. I don't have room for all the tomatoes. It is not that I don't have room so much as water and a good place to plant them. You are so polite. I hope I don't offend people because I don't even try to stay on topic. It has been a little slow here and I think activity is good. Maybe I have driven everyone away. I have had soil conditioners on my list for some time. I will look for the product you use.
