Are you allowed backyard burning?

Our local government is attempting to ban backyard burning on all properties, regardless of size. For us, this ban would cause an impossible situation so we are opposing it. I just wondered if this is a common situation in other rural areas and if your local government has banned burning, have they offered an alternative? For example,in the Victoria area, homeowners can rake leaves to the edge of the street and a vacuum truck picks them up. Our gov't. is offering nothing and our 150 huge trees dump piles of branches on the ground with every storm. We compost leaves but still burn small branches, twigs, broom, blackberry, etc. I would appreciate knowing what the law is in regard to this in your municipality. Thanks for any info.
