What happened in your garden this week (19 September)?

hmmm... let's see.... for originality: weeding.

I need to transplant a couple things, but that never gets done... Hopefully I'll do it by the week end.

I thought Ophelia would water my garden, but we got a wopping 0.6 inches of rain from it...

Annuals keep getting bigger and better. Cosmos and Cleome are huge and browelia is really blooming now. Nasturtiums continue to bounce back. Dahlia Bishop of Llandaff was worth the wait. Crazy Love dahlia which got too big for its place is really blooming so I am forgiving it. Queen Elizabeth (the rose) has what may be her final blooms. Boltonia is very nice but behind a huge helenium which is starting to fade. Sedum Autum Joy and especially Spectabile (Bluestone) are making the bees happy. Colchicum came back and is blooming. Hope the other autum crocuses do the same. Starting to cut back some perennials that are fading. Have decided to let the garden tough it out while I am out of town next week. Need to take notes for movement of plants for next spring now. That helenium needs another spot and I dont need a hedge of shasta daisys next to my walk.

Not much here - too busy to hang out in the garden, which means lots of weeding this coming week.

Sept 30..... in Franklin I have pansies which were cut back 6 weeks ago and are now revived back from spring looking happy and blooming strong again. wax and fiberous begonias, kale, shrimp plant, calendula, snaps, petunias, bachelor buttons, malva, coleus, sweet annie, false queen anne lace, lavendar, sunflowers, rudbeckia, zinnias, asters, phyostegia, asters whats still is alive with lots of foliage is: avacadoe plants, key lime tree, scented geraniums,Banana tree, orange tree, taragon, lettuce, onions, parsley, cucmbers(dont look great-too manyducks trampling onthem)The maples are turning bright red What I have growing in West Tremont, Maine is well, we have a garden center so everything is looking pretty good very diverse in plant species and still much is lush and blooming. In my pataote beds 20X20 feet The pataotes still have not died back much so I am still waiting for that harvest to occur. My garlic is blooming nicely! The lavetera did fabulous this year and is still bloomin it little heads off along the pet zoo animal fence. There is also lots of sunflowers blooming happily!

Sifted compost and spread it around some newer mixed beds. I really just needed the space, those 3-section compost bin systems are actually one section too few, no matter how big the sections are. Made a mental note that when building my next one, I'll remember that each bin should be slightly smaller than the previous one. Kind of a no-brainer, but I never remember it until a few seasons into using the bins. I also dug up some volunteers that grew all last season in bad places - rose campion in a line of boxwood, big yellow snapdragon on the edge of the front path ... that kind of thing. You kind of hate to move smething that you love, that took the initiative to pop up of its own volition, but at some point you just ahve to pull rank and show these plants that you are, at least nominally, in control of the garden. Got my first case of tendonitis of the season. It's bad enough that I can't shift my car with my right hand, which means it's ALMOST bad enough to keep me out of the garden. And, I spent many hours walking around the vicinity of the back door trying to finalize plans for a new paved seating area. I'd love to be able to plop down on a patio right outside the door, but the "profile" of the back of my house doesn't really allow that, because of additions and bulkheads and a mini-deck at the door. So, I'm going to have to figure out a way to provide the sense of partial enclosure that the house walls normally provide, somewhere away from the house. The actual bricklaying will be the easy part, it's figuring out where everything will work that I find really difficult.

On Sunday I installed a new shade garden around my shed. When it's in the mid 90s and humid you don't want to work in the sun. What nursery has the best shade plant selection in central CT? Unfortunately the load of compost I had delivered this spring and used as top dressing on many of my gardens was filled with weed seeds. Obviously it hadn't been "cooked" enough. Now I have grass and weeds sprouting everywhere and have to mulch over the compost that I had hoped to use as mulch. I get my bagged mulch that I use in the mixed beds in 3 cu foot bags at a seasonal garden center and they close on Saturday so I'll be loading up today and tomorrow. Everywhere else will get the bulk shredded stuff. I'm still planting containers and annuals but hope to have everything wrapped up in the next week or so so I can move into maintenance mode only. With rain in the forecast all weekend, what are the chances that will happen? Sue

Things have actually started to pick up here. I haven't had to seriously water in almost a week, so all those hours that were previously spent dragging the hose around were now put to good use!

Moved a hydrangea, planted a spirea that was in a pot for two years, planted a styrax japonica tree, and got about 20 plants put in the ground, which is not even a dent in what I need to get planted, (especially since I just got a Bluestone order in!) but it felt good to make a start.

I've also been spreading coffee grounds in my new lasagna beds. Finished the coffee grounds in one, and hope to start in another bed tomorrow.

Washed out some empty pots, and finally cleaning out my milk cartons from winter sowing. I don't like to just throw them away, so I have to empty them, pull off the tape (that's the hard part!) and get them into the recycling. Considering I had over 200 cartons, that's a huge job that I've been putting off, and I made a big dent in it.

Overall, it's been a pretty productive week - for a change, lol!
