I need some help--what should I put in this spot?

I'm thinking of a really neat green solid or a bluish green that will take some direct

sun about noon for awhile!! The one there is 'Hyacinthina' but it's not doing that well

and I need to replace it! I think it should be medium tall! That's 'Abba Dabba Do' behind it!

Janice Girl, my very shiney shiney green green 'Royal Standard' would be gorgeous in there, with its terribly fragrant blooms. Or how about 'Queen of the Seas,' which I understand turns green eventually? I could send you a few RS sections in the Spring, Dearie????? (feeling foxy today).

Dear Pat--I appreciate your generosity but I have a whole bunch of Royal Standard, already! :o)
You're right, they do have wonderful blooms! I also have 'Queen of the Seas', too!

I'm thinking of a stately type of green with some uniqueness, if that's possible! :o)

I looked up 'Fleet Week' since UK was interested in it and it is a lovely hosta--so I'm wondering...!

Any other thoughts?

'Empress Jo' is not nearly as strong a grower as many other Gallicas and requires a good five years or more to make a respectable plant. The Gallicas from Pickering and budded onto R. laxa, not R. multiflora because R. laxa makes a much stronger bud union with Gallicanae types than R. multiflora does. I agree that this variety is undoubtedly performing as well as it can as a budded plant, and you will see an even slower, less satisfactory specimen if you grow it own root. 'Stanwell Perpetual' is very much the same. It can take a decade to grow a decent specimen on its own roots. Paul

If it were me, I would put something tall and skinny at the two back corners: small arborvitae or other conifer, or even an iris with good foliage. Then I would mix in about three small evergreen somethings: maybe a couple more azaleas (is that what's in the corner?)or a couple more boxwoods. I would use either the azaleas or the boxwoods and locate the other one somewhere else. It's a small space for both. With a total of three of these shrubs, I'd put two in the middle at the back and one in front of them to make a triangle. Now you have some evergreen structure that will make the bed look organized 4 seasons a year. Now, use the astilbe and columbine as filler on either side of the front and center evergreen. You might want to add another plant or two of each to fill in their space. Then move your impatiens (?) into the front corners for spots of color, and let those Lamiums loose in the middle. I'd put that lovely geranium in a pot by the door.

@practigal, I think one reason it is so addicting is because it's so casual. Like having coffee with a friend while doing easy work. It's not like trying to figure out a whole house floor plain - and construction started yesterday, or problem solve an issue with a sub contractor that just cost you multiple thousands of $'s on a botched tile installation. I know we have stressful issues, but maybe not as often compared to some of the other forums on GW. So the laundry forum is usually light hearted and our clothes survive the crappy detergent with the horrible smell (that Larsi discribes so well ;-0

If you don’t need a place to set a coffee mug/ book/etc on a side table there, I’d do a floor lamp. If you’d like a place to set a drink or something while sitting there, I’d go for a complimentary table with a table lamp. Agreed with others, it does not need to match the coffee table, in fact - I personally find I like rooms that aren’t perfectly matched the best!! Something black/wood that compliments the coffee table would be perfect! (In my phone so I can’t see it now- but someone posted a table that doesn’t have the four legs- it kind of hangs off one side - I LOVE that one for your space!!)

Something very blue like H. Gentle Giant, H. Steve Molovan or a classic like. H. Krossa Regal or a new spin on it like H. Regal Supreme.

Oh my word, Rob! I've never heard of 'H.Steve Moldovan' but if it really is anything like the pic.

I would move the Abba Dabba Do up front and put a big blue in its place. A.D.D can take the sun. Steve Moldovan is not a fast grower but is well worth the wait .

Rob, (may I call you that?) that is a great idea! WHY, I hadn't thought to do that...I don't know!!

UK--thank you for your kind words and I agree, we just can't have ENOUGH space for the collecting
and displaying of hosta. The one you asked about is 'H.Jimmy Crack Corn'! It's such an easy one to grow
and the pay-off is so good, too. I also have 'H.Sea Gulf Stream' and they are very similar, in my garden!

Lois, I do not have 'H.Nigrescens' nor do I have 'H.Tenryu' and have always wanted to get one of them!!
Hopefully, I'll finally get one, but, AGAIN I say, "I am seriously running out of space--REALLY I AM!!".

Sorry, for all the direct links to HL, if you find them annoying--I just love the ease it provides for us
to see directly what we are referring to, by way of that great resource. You can either blame or thank
'DonR' for my practicing doing that! :o) hehehe

LOL, Linda--you don't have to endure the long cold nights in my garden--just come over for a visit
in the cool of the day and the glory of the evening in the garden with the frogs I've finally lured to it!

I do suggest, in order to really enjoy the time and the hosta--come next Spring or Summer! LOL

Please do a separate post on how to add the Hosta Library hosta pictures to your posts. That is fabulis. I want to be able to do that as I'm sure do lots of other hosta forum members.

Oh, Connie--DonR taught me all I know on the subject!

It really took a lot of practice for me to finally get it right, and it does take
extra time to do it, but, I for one, think it's worth it when I come to a post
that is using that 'clickable direct link'!

I REALLY should let him be the *teacher*!!

'McT/Myrle' emailed me privately with a great idea! Her computer has been giving her fits
and she's trying to get back to posting with us, soon--hopefully!

She even 'tweaked' my pic. and I like the look she's suggesting! She says for me to raise the
'Abba Dabba Do' in the back and the 'Olive Bailey Langdon' to the left side of the bed
(under the fountain) and put 'Queen of the Seas' in place of 'Hyacinthina'!

What do you think?

Hurry back 'McT', we miss you!

BTW--does 'QOTS' get that large? If so--I can't wait!!!

Wow Janice, u even have frogs,oh my goodness!I am a big frog collector,had the passion since I was a little girl and would catch them at the pond with by bare hands, of course I always let them go.Boy,those were the days! Lol Wish I could take the trip to see your gardens but too many obligations here at home. Maybe someday!:)
