Fall New Eng. Courses, Lectures and Programs

I am starting to see notes about fall gardening classes, lectures and programs scheduled around New England. I thought we could post these in this thread.

And I'll start by posting information on a lecture on stone walls at Westford, Mass library:

Dry Stone Walls of New England: Wednesday, October 18 @ 7 p.m. in the Meeting Room Have you ever admired 'the art of the dry stone wall' Discover their history and future with longtime dry stone-waller, Chris Tracey. If you caught Chris's wildly popular lecture in 2002, you'll want to join us for his updated program with new slides showcasing unique and ordinary structures composed of stone, without cement or mortar. This free program is open to all ages and does not require registration.

I went to the first talk in 2002 and this was a great talk! It definitely relates to gardens and gardening and he does discuss how to go about building your own stone wall. And for history buffs he talks a little about the history of the stone walls in New England.

And New England Wildflower Society has their fall schedule out on their web site. Check it out as they now offer events in all 6 New England states. One highlight I noted is a FREE lecture by Dan Hinkley:

I am a bit apologetic because I did want to make the complete conversion from synthetic to organic. I posted this in the general forum as opposed to the organic forum since I was looking for synthetic pre-M products and knew I'd probably get some heat in the organic forum. Unfortunately there is a lot of debate on the effectiveness of CGM as a pre-M. I've heard it works great, takes several years to effectively work, acts as a fertilizer for the weeds, and everything in between. I have the added problem of needing a pre-M that doesn't fertilize because having zoysia this far north means there is quite a bit of time between weed germination and when the zoysia actually starts to grow. This lag time I believe is what has caused all of my problems over the years (where I would put down a chemical fertilizer too early and the weeds would get a nice boost). I think the CGM I put down last spring and this past fall compounded the issue because while it may have had some pre-M properties, it also gave a nice dose of fertilizer to the soil; fertilizer that the actual lawn was not able to use until much later. By that time the weeds had gained a foothold and thanked me for the feeding. Thanks everyone for the comments. I had thought my hunch was true (about not having any seed left), but didn't want to kill off the seeds if it was common knowledge that X% of seed will germinate in the spring after the hard frost even if they didn't come up in the fall seeding. I think I'll go along with a pre-M application without fertilizer, then wait until shortly before the zoysia comes out of dormancy to go back to my organic approach.

crouch- If you believe your soil is compacted, you should consider aerating as part of your late summer/early fall lawn care program. Try sticking a long (6" or so) screwdriver into your soil. If it is tough to get it in to the handle, you may well have a compaction issue. Not sure where in Jersey you are, but right around Labor Day is when I get into aerating/overseeding activities in CT. Cold overnight temps, shorter days, and an abundance of maple leaves makes October much too late around here for a high success rate with kbg overseeding. I was absolutely blown away with the results of my efforts last fall, which I moved up to Sept 2-4 (I know everyone says "fall overseeding," but "late summer" would be more precise). Of course I'd love to pat myself on the back as some sort of lawn guru, but the truth is we had pleasant days, not too cool nights, regular rain, etc. right into Thanksgiving! With crabgrass dying with the first good frost, I may not automatically reach for the roundup. I have found that cutting my existing crabgrass/lawn as short as possible and bagging/raking the clippings allows me to seed immediately without the use of roundup. If timed properly, the desirable seed germinates and gets strong enough in the fall so I can apply a pre-m in the spring to prevent the crabgrass seed from germinating. I wouldn't necessarily give up on it this year, but I can't expect you will get optimal results at this point either. I would heed billhill's advice about organic material and watering. KBG is a notorious slow germinator. I would also seriously consider having a soil test done. I understand you wanting to be able to mentally turn the corner on this one way or another and nobody likes to see their hard work go unrewarded. Maybe adjust expectations downward and hope to be pleasantly surprised now. Armed with the knowledge you can gain on this board, this may well be the last spring you need to endure lawn envy.

The key to this problem is that if you work long hours durning the day. Time managment is the key factor I have found for my master gardening. I work 10+ hours a day and I have family. You learn to manage your time wisely if you truely want to do the volenteer activitys. My husband is very saportive and that helps me alot. If theres something out of town we may plan a weekend at the location so I can attend whats going on. My 2 adult children and there familys know I am very into this. They think its great. I do take my 2 grandchildren everyother weekend so its all time management for me. If something is going on the weekend I have grandchildren I rearange there time with us so they dont miss out. I have been doing alot of time management this summer so I can do what I want. I have became a Master Gardener within 6 months of finishing my class time. I am working toward the Advanced and hope to finish it within my first year after taking the class. Its a goal I am sure I can get to as long as I keep on my time management. Time mangagement is the key!!!

Hey Donna, I think it is wonderful that you know as much as you do. I'm sorry that your community won't have the chance to share in that knowledge. I hope that as new methods and information are developed that you will have the same access that the MGs will have through the updates and continuing education they participate in. One of the things I enjoy most in the program is the notification we get from researchers in contact with the Extension Service as new information is developed. I learned how to propagate plants in test tubes a while back so I could teach other MGs how to do it. I learned how to build and maintain an ornamental pond for our Display Gardens.I also researched and built a greenroof to demonstrate to visitors. I am sure I could have done those projects and others without being a Master Gardener and maybe I could have passed that information on to others but it sure wouldn't have been the dozens and sometime hundreds that I have had a chance to talk to. Yes, I will admit it is marvelous to know all that stuff but being able to pass that info on to others is the real ego boost. Recently I needed to learn a great deal about the Emerald Ash Borer that has invaded this part of the country so I could answer the questions that came in about it. Much of that info came in from other Extension Offices and I was able to answer close to 50 inquiries about that problem that came in on the hotline. I am only one of many who answer those calls so you can multiply what I got by about 10 times. Does that count as worthwhile? When I was asked to teach some of the classes I am sure that I did not perform as well as a professional instructor but I did get better with time. I seriously doubt that the program would be to your taste since you are only interested in what you can get out of it and it sounds like you are more interested in telling others that you don't need to learn any more than finding out what you might not know. At Tower Hill....

"Autumn Splendor" Flower Show

Plan to visit Tower Hill Botanic Garden, Fri. through Sun., Nov. 3 to 5th, 11 French Drive, West Boylston, to "AUTUMN SPLENDOR". A Standard Flower Show put on by over 30 State Garden Clubs will give you a chance to enjoy the members creativity in floral design and expertise in horticulture. Fall dried arrangements, designs and pressed flowers will be featured. Members also enter their horticultural specimens that they have grown in hopes for awards.
