red flowering currant losing leaves now

I have several red flowering currants (Ribes sanguineum) that seemed to be doing well. However the earliest blooming one--and it has more of a pink than red flower--has already lost most of its leaves. There are buds on all the bare branches, but that's it! Another couple of plants that didn't flower nearly as abundantly are still fully leaved. Is the bare one in trouble? Is there something I can/should do for it?

Well, since no one here had a suggestion, I bit the bullet (Felcos?) and cut down the bald branches. No green inside (whew!). But there are other branches from the same plant with all their leaves, just beginning to fruit.
I'm guessing it was either some sort of disease or the cycle of the plant--after a few years of blooms, it's time to prune off branches that lose their leaves.

I have a few growing naturally at the edge of the woods. They look nice when flowering, but then get a black mildew in the summer and lose a few leaves.

Chomped off down to the stem usually is a sign of hornworms. Look closely for them at night and dispose of in soapy water and go get some BT K variant for future ones. Leaf loss is usually a sign of overwatering -- water, deeply, let dry out completely, water deeply and so on is the best way to water peppers. They can also lose them to drought conditions, so if you don't think you're overwatering, then some heavy mulch might help. Shilty, try PlantFiles: Coral Bark Japanese Maple It may be an Acer palmatum 'Sango-kaku' It has brillant almost flourescent pink-red-orange leaves in Spring. Leaves turn green with seasons' growth. Brillant colors in Fall. You didn't mention bark color---this has distinctive pinkish-red tones on newer growth, especially. How many lobes on the leaves? Are they highly indented, or not? Your best bet is to keep typing in descriptions 'til you stumble over it on some site. You could start with Cornell, if you like. Good luck!

That reminds me of the local native red-flowering currant we planted several years ago. The thing was coarse and grew rampantly, had to be removed even after hard prunings and it had more space than yours does. Another one down the street, planted as a foundation plant, was soon in the eave. We do see daintier cultivars around the neighborhood. Yours has very large leaves, did it come with a label?

There is a caterpillar which bores into tomato stems. You should see a hole about 3-4 mm wide. Above the point of entry, the stem will be puny and slow-growing. If you have this problem, you're probably better off just cutting that branch off. Yes, branch dieback will be the result of a problem.

What sort of problem? It hasn't affected other branches. The dieback went all the way to the trunk of the plant.
