?? about Campanula 'Mariesii'

I have a campanula "Mariesii" that was blooming nicely and now all the flowers on the tall stems have turned brown and shriveled up. We have had plenty of rain so I can't imagine what the problem could be. Any ideas? Is this the natural progression of this plant? Should I cut down the stems and maybe I will get new growth.

I am a newbie so maybe you need additional advice. But I believe all Campanula reblooms. This is what I have learned. Cut the dead bloom as close to the stems as possible without damamging any new bud formation. Also, if your not used to this plant and maybe yours doesn't do this but when you cut the stems a thick milky white fluid seeps out and I guess this is totally normal. I hope this helps.

Mine is the old-fashioned straight grandiflorus (16 years old) and easily reaches 3', and sometimes more. . .Ginny's observation about dead-heading is right-on. . .I can usually squeeze an extra month of bloom, if I'm diligent. There are several plants together in one area, and, by choice, I keep one of them pruned back early and all season - it never exceeds 2', and blooms prolifically. As for flopping, they are one of the tight-clumping plants that can be perfectly supported using a simple (inexpensive) tomato cage - you may be "aware" of the metal cage more the first season, but after that first winter-over, they rust very nicely and blend right in. . . I like campanulas very much. My only quibble is that I haven't managed to grow any that have a very long flowering time, even with deadheading. My favorite tall one is probably a peach-leaved variety someone sent me seeds for. I think it's c. persicifolia 'Brantwood.' (Might be 'Brentwood' too.) If my memory from previous seasons is correct, it gets to be about almost four feet tall and the flowers are a deep, saturated blue-purple. This year I've also started seeds for c. pyramidalus (my spelling on that might be wrong). Supposed to get quite tall, the pictures make it look good. Most campanulas I've tried have been been pretty tough, except for Dickson's Gold which I think got completely eaten by slugs, and a furry little one that just never took. And there are a number that are short-lived or biennial. I think most of them appreciate being in mostly sunny spots, though my (short) Serbian bellflower has tolerated a lot of shade as have the punctata types (but they bloom less). Never noticed any diseases, except that if the rest of the tall garden plants get powdery mildew, they probably will too.

I haven't collected my own seeds ... hope to next year. However, I seem to remember the seeds I purchased had two different shades, one lighter and one darker.

Wonderful germinators. Unfortunately they are deer food, and so I graced my mother's garden with them since she has no deer. She's a happy camper!! LOL!

kt-You are so right. I did a search for my campanula Mariesii and came up w/a beautiful blue bellflower that looks nothing like mine. Another case of a perennial being mislabeled. I saw it 2 summers ago in Home Depot while I was waiting for some campanula "Cherry Bells" from Bluestone Nursery. Well my Mariesii looks alot like my Cherry Bells except she has deep purple hanging bells. The foliage is similar as is the height. I don't know how to post photos and we just bought a digital camera so I need one of my daughters to show me again how to download then upload I guess.

I wish I could find a sute that has alot of pictures of various campanulas so I can id this one and then hopefully find out why all the bells turned brown and dried up! Come to think of it this also happened last summer.
