The broadleaf weeds are easily killed with Weed B Gone, sprayed according to directions. The grassy perennials look to me like Tall Fescue (which is different from Turf-Type Tall Fescue) and quackgrass and orchardgrass. I'd spot-spray Round Up on each plant, and get it killed now, early in the season. Start at the far end, and walk backward toward the house as you spray, so that you don't step on fresh roundup, and walk it where you don't want it. I'm 90% certain that it's what bp said above - K-31 fescue (I think it's short for Ken31 - nothing like a little marketing to trick the old consumer, but that's another topic). My understanding of this grass is that it's "contractor grade" - very often found in generic grass seed mixes sold in the past. I'm willing to be corrected, but I believe it's much less common now, as improved varieties of fescues have become available. I have several patches - it blends fairly well, but can be noticable once you a.) know what it is and b.)becomes a big enough "clump" that it starts growing "sideways". I haven't heard of it spreading, much less aggressive spreading. Because of its horizontal growth, it may appear to be getting bigger, but I suspect the "root zone" has stayed the same, and it's just the blades of grass that get longer w/o being cut. If you're just trying for a green grass, it's not all bad - even in the middle of our high humidity, high heat summers, I don't recall it ever going dormant (i.e. not green)like bp alluded to - but his "droughts" are much more severe that what you or I would normally experience. If you want a uniform looking lawn, than R/U or the traditional mechanical method of foot and spade for removal are likely your best bet. Around here, KBG sod is about $1 / sq ft. At this point in the growing season, I think that would be your easiest bet. Yes the roots may grow deep on the existing K-31, but even if a few blades manage to poke back up through the new sod, I would think it would be a while before you even noticed they came back. It reminds me of polygonum (but I am not an expert). Consider the photo of this polygonum (scroll down): http://www.arthurleej.com/p-o-m-Oct03.html There are a bunch of different polygonums (200 according to the link). The one I am most familiar with from Illinois is lady's thumb; I have a bit of it here in WNC, also tear-thumb (definitely correctly named), and at least one which lacks the midleaf-spot and claws which I haven't tried very hard to differentiate from all the other polygonums. Let it flower and see if that makes identification easier. The ones I've seen all have flowers in the red-pink-pale pink spectrum. The one at the link apparently flowers greenish-white.
