I love the bright, deep purple of vernonias. In Central Texas there are two species that can bloom anytime between June and September depending on rain. In open grassy areas of calcareous clay you will find V. baldwinii (Picture) that grows to 3 ft tall and spreads by seed and underground runners. The other is V. lindheimeri (Picture) which grows to 2 ft on limestone hillsides of the Edwards escarpment. It has the same type of flowers, but not quite as showy. (Picture)

I have a whole field filled with NY ironweed and goldenrod. It literally hums with bees and butterflies. It makes me so happy to see nature as God designed.

Be careful with ironweed. I introduced some on a creekbank beside a pasture on my farm in western North Carolina and in no time, it has taken over almost an acre of the pasture, jumped the creek and adjacent dirt road and is taking over another pasture. It's beautiful and attracts the bees and butterflies as you discuss, but just make sure you've got a control plan in place if you have as much "success" with your plants and I have had with mine. It's painful to have to eradicate these now-weeds.
