If you are thinking that by 'sawing off the stumps' and 'sanding' (YIKES!) you can make the tree look like nothing ever happened - well, that's just a bad idea. The tree needs some of the branch collar (never, ever prune a branch flush with the main trunk) in order to heal over the wound. Let the poor thing be. It needs to heal as much as it can over your cuts. I bet when it leafs out it won't look quite so bad. Keep it well watered and hope for the best. Lesson learned, eh? (Oh, and a good rule of thumb to keep in mind in future: in pruning, never remove more than 1/3 of the plant in one growing season.)

True that 'Kanzan' is one of the more vigorous cherries, but virtually all will get larger than you want. The only commonly grown one that doesn't, 'Cheal's Weeping', is in my experience, very prone to disease and dieback and usually doesn't look very nice. Might be better to try something other than a cherry, such as some of the Chaenomeles quinces, which are generally fairly small shrubs inside your size limits. PS spellcheck: 'Kanzan'. @akamainegrower - I can certainly contact the nursery to find out. While I bought it in July, they said (and I'm going strictly on what they told me) that the tree was being kept dormant, and so when it was shipped to me was the first time it came out of wherever they were keeping it dormant. I do like the tree, and don't want to just get rid of it. I still do want a weeping tree in my front yard, preferably with a dark pink or purple color. I was looking at a Lavender Twist Weeping Redbud, but can't really buy one now. When would be best to both purchase the new tree (preferably a well established one 3+ feet tall) and to transplant this Cherry to a new location. I have a spot in the back of my house that gets plenty of sunlight, and if this is a Nanking and it will produce fruit it will keep the mess away from the front of the house. Thanks

How about other trees in the same height category: paperbark maple Acer griseum corkscrew willow 'twisty baby' locust Redbud.....maybe a great native choice for you!!! or slower growing trees with outstanding foliage like some beech cultivars... 'roseomarginata' or some wonderful conifers that put on unbelievable spring shows like: Pinus contorta 'taylors sunburst' 3-4 WEEKS!!!of yellow new growth. See Photo. I could go on forever... red leaf japanese maple...bloodgood, atropurpureum, emperor(supposed to be the hardiest of all, emperor I or II) the debate with crabapples will always be...ARE THE WONDERFUL FLOWERS WORTH THE TROUBLE OF THE UNATTRACTIVE DISEASE RIDDEN FOLIAGE...AND IS ANYTHING WORTH SPRAYING IN MY GARDEN TO CONTROL DISEASE?...my honest opinion, there's plenty of wonderful plants that have outstanding characteristics that NEVER need to be sprayed.
