Buckthorn

I visited Terrene and she shared yellow violets and many bulbs from the site of a future sidewalk. My big score was a hunk of fall blooming crocus. I am thrilled! She has bluebirds nesting in tree cavity close to her house, too, and watching them was better than a first run movie.

Also, thanks to her, I got a review of the buckthorn invasion. What a noxious prolific weed! It is everywhere in my hillside garden this year, and along the edges of our "service road" and in the weedy woods. I'm going to find the mother tree and kill the sucker. These must have seeded in last year and I just didn't know what they were. I see the first season seedlings all around too. They have very tenacious roots.

I suggest you scout your property for the seedlings and stay on top of weeding. I think there is a bumper crop this year. This seems to be the spring for weeds.

Just google Buckthorn "images" and you'll see all the pictures you need to identify it.
