Need a good dwarf red Japanese maple- any suggestions?
Comments (5)Hard to come up with a non-weeping form that will stay narrow enough for you :-) I'd suggest 'Red Pygmy' or 'Beni Otake'. You could also try something like 'Fireglow', 'Oregon Sunset or 'Sara D' but all will eventually grow taller and wider than you wish and I'd not recommend pruning to maintain a set size....See MoreMaple that stays red during the summer?
Comments (4)You're in a tricky situation, trying to grow a Japanese maple in Florida. If you plant the tree in full sun, it's leaves will probably burn in summers. If you plant in shade, it might not achieve the best red color. Best situation is probably a site that gets morning sun and afternoon shade. JM varieties that are supposed to retain their red color and withstand heat best include Fireglow and Emperor. Bloodgood is also supposed to be good in that regard, but it has been around so long that your tree might not be a pure strain....See MoreJapanese Red Maple
Comments (12)Thanks!!! You guys have really been helpful. I believe the dwarf my brother & fiance have is the Acer palmatum dissectum. And I believe the one I just purchased is the Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum'. Of course this is just me guessing. So far neither my brothers nor my fiances are seed bearing, what a bummer - I had hopes for a free seed! The one I just purchased came from a seed bearing parent but I'm still at a loss for its mature age. So as I read your link gardengal it seems we all probably have monoecious trees and none will ever bear viable seeds since none are very near another JR maple. What I am understanding is that with these particular varieties I would need two trees; a young monoecious one that would be female and a more mature monoecious one that would be male. But without the mature age of these trees I wouldn't know where to begin. So the hopes of owning a fertile seed bearer are pretty much shot :( . However, the seeds I have been given sound like the Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' and were picked two days ago. I'm not sure if I should attempt to grow them since I don't think they were/are ripe. But I guess there's no harm in seeing what happens....See MoreLooking for a Japanese maple that has red leaves all year round
Comments (17)@Bayarea_girl z9ca I have a JM on my front yard that's upright and stands at about 15ft plus tall. The leaves on my JM don't turn green and stay red all year round. Even if it's extremely hot abd sunny in the Summer it just turns into a darker red like more of a purple/wine coloured shade of red instead of it "Bronzing out" like @gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) said. I'm not sure what type of JM i have but through the seasons i know my JM turns into a really super bright almost neon red in the Spring, then during the Summer it turns into a purplish/wine coloured red, in the Autumn/Fall it changes to a brighter blood red color until the Winter time when it turns into a darker burgundy colored red four like a week then all the leaves fall off....See Moreginny12
