potentially stupid question re: starting plants from cuttings

Okay, for all I know this is the stupidest question ever asked on this forum, but I'm going to put on my big girl pants and ask it anyway.

I've started tons of houseplants from cuttings indoors. It's always been a very easy and painless thing to do.

Is it possible to start a plant from cuttings outdoors (given our climate!) in the same way?

I'm thinking of coleus in particular, but in general it's something I've been curious about. It would be so nice to be able to skip having to root the cutting indoors.
