Preventing winter moth damage?

Lalala (zone 6b)

Now that it's getting warmer, I'm starting to think about the winter month larvae emerging. We are surrounded by maples that get eaten pretty badly by the larvae in the spring. (You can actually hear them munching, and hear their droppings falling on the leaves below... disgusting.) Last year (our first spring in this house) our roses and weeping cherry were badly damaged too. They both put out new growth after the infestation was over, but it was clearly stressful for the plants.

I'm wondering whether anyone has had success with spraying or otherwise protecting smaller shrubs/trees. I have a toddler so don't want to spray anything too toxic, though. I'm hoping this year will not be so bad.
