What about Japanese maples? Love 'em or hate 'em?

Hello

I'm a big fan of native trees, but I'll admit there's a few exotics to my area (western NC) that I also like. Namely: Dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), Norway spruce (Picea abies), and Japanese maple. Unfortunately I found out that the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has Norway spruce on their list of troublesome exotics. That's a shame because I considered them a good substitute for the troubled Canadian hemlock, but that's another story...

Anyway, I found a great deal on a pretty, green-leafed Japanese maple and planted it beside our front gate last year. Now I've become more conscious of landscaping with natives, and I'm feeling a bit of regret. What's the general consensus for J. maples among native plant fans? I used to think they were something special but lately I've been seeing them for sale everywhere. Just wondering ... that tree is still small enough to move.
