I never got along with my in-laws. MIL took a dislike to me from Day One. She was very upset her son and I chose to live together for a year and a half before we got married, and originally refused to come to our wedding because it wasn't performed in a Catholic Church. Well, DUH, your son was married before and divorced , that's why. After our marriage she criticized me , my cooking, my cleaning, just everything about me. When the kids came along, she gave them small, cheap, junky birthday and Christmas gifts,like fake 99 cent store toys, while lavishing nicer gifts on her "real" grandchildren, her own daughter's two kids. On the other hand, my family is small and 450 miles away. I love them but don't get to see them as often as I like. I tried to have a relationship with my two SILs. One is single , what we used to call an "old maid" while the other has a disfunctional family-her son can't get and hold a job, daughter had 3 kids out of wedlock and ended up losing custody of them, a huge disappointment for her parents. So, no, I don't get along with his side. And I don't really try to anymore.

I have a huge family with around 70 or so first cousins. I don't get to see the very often since I have never lived close to them. We have fun when we get together.

My inlaws are another story. Can't stand them. Loved my fil when he was alive, but the females in the family and dh's living uncle are toxic. I've come to the realization that dh's family pretty much alienates all of the inlaws. They bad mouth everyone. They keep a tit for tat of how many times they see us versus us seeing the other side of the family. Us outsiders are expected to drop everything and go do whatever they want, whenever they want regardless of whether it is in the best interest of our core family. We lived near these people for a few years, but only saw them on gift giving occasions that benefitted them. My mil has never been interested in my kids, her only grandchildren. She says she would pay attention if dh's siblings have kids. Most likely won't happen. Her loss. My kids have no interest in her either.

Like/love them mostly! I can't say I dislike any of my extended family (this includes families of my in-laws)... although there is some drama on both sides which I like to stay out of.

At my age there are not a lot left. Marriage and living in different states seem to end most relationships. We did have a family reunion every few years but the Elders have passed so that ended. I liked 99% of them.

Love them! I was an only child who always wanted siblings. (My mom had two miscarriages after me, one the year before she died.) I envied people with big families, although the ideal I envisioned does not happen often in reality.

My mother-in-law and I were a mutual admiration society, but she's been gone a long time now. I continue to be lucky with my in-laws, though; I couldn't be happier with my son's wife and daughter's husband.

I have enough problems with my immediate family

I see my extended family once a year at Christmastime. I'm not close to any of them. I don't dislike them. I just live too far away from them to be friends.

I'm was an only child. My mother was an only child. My parents separated when I was about two. My father's family ignored me and my mother.

My father was one of seven; all deceased. I have two younger half-sisters I met once when I was a young teen. I have ten first cousins. My eldest cousin attended my wedding and we exchanged letters now and then; she died three years ago. My next-eldest cousin is in the East; I last saw him in 1963. We email about twice a year. I made a point to visit two single female cousins when we were in northern California several years ago; I email them if any family genealogy surfaces.

My DH was an only child in his adoptive family. He has two younger full siblings and two older half-sibs in his birth family; one came to meet us, but none are interested in knowing him.

Guess I could say, "WHAT etended family?" Fortunately, our own 'only' married a lovely girl, and we have a DGS and DGD.

I haven't had much of any contact with extended family since I was a kid. I have a lot of contact with DH's extended family though and they are delightful. After so many years I really think of them as my own family.

A lot of my extended family is dying off and a bunch of what's left is trying to cash in on estates. Never saw so many con artists in my life. Would make a great TV show but nobody would believe it.

Cynic - I would. For several years I shared an office with another legal secretary who handled all of the estates in the firm. That experience and 30 more years in law really brought out the raw truth in many aspects, and death often brings out the very worst in families, but many won't believe it before it's too late!

Fortunately, when my mom passed and I was the executrix, there were no legal problems at all.

I get on better with my inlaws than with my own family. Before she passed on my relationship with my mother was somewhat fraught, and since she passed on I have finally cut all ties with my extremely toxic brother.
Any of my DH's extended family, we would do anything for and they would do anything for us. If we ever divorced (highly unlikely after nearly 30 years :-) ) I'm sure we would still be close.

The only family member I had problems with was my alcoholic/drug using Brother in law. He died from his lifestyle. Caused a lot of problems for the family. W I managed to allow him to be part of our family for DHs and DMIL's sake but we knew lock things up and hide the bottles. Like many people of his ilk he could be quite charming when he wasn't drinking, drugging, scamming or demanding some sort of delusional entitlement.

I have been recently back in touch with my niece and am happy that she seems to have finally broken the pattern of the dysfunction she was raised in. After a rocky start she has a good guy in her life and 3 happy healthy boys.

LOVE my DD's in-laws. We are instant family. They love my DD and we in turn love their DS. All of us clicked instantly. Truly a happy blended family. Boths DHs are quite and we moms are the outgoing ones in personalities. The men just sit and shake their heads when we get together. The "kids" just sigh and smile a lot. ;-)
In a few days DSILs brother will be getting married. We will add one more to our small clan.

I also love my son's lady. She is perfect for him and I consider her my DDIL. They have been together the longest of the "kids". Her mom loves him too which I am told is quite an accomplishment. Bad men history and mistrust in her DDs choices I guess. But my DS is the apple of her eye. I like her too. Unlike my DDs inlaws we don't have as much in common but I really like her and we get along just fine.

We are a small family. I only have two cousins and a one brother. One cousins has one DD. We don't see each other often but we all like each other. For many years I was estranged from them due to conflict between my mother and her brother. We all feel we missed out because of it.

DH's-really like some, barely tolerate others. Especially his sister, she really bugs me. But I just choose to stay away from her and her weird husband and kids.

I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters, all married with children. We all are very close and friends with each others in laws. I have close to 100 cousins, aunts, uncles, you name it. My mom has 8 brothers and sisters, my dad had 2 brothers. We have this huge, huge extended family and we all live within a 50 mile radius of each other, so we see each other a lot and are a pretty close knit group. If one screams for help we all come running. I love my HUGE extended family.
