Haven't spotted any doves here yet. Not that I miss that early morning racket!

(That's my favorite error - amazing how confusing it is to most people. I try to explain that 'its' is like 'his' - no apostrophe. When I'm editing, it's always the first thing I look for. )

We had a pair last spring in our hanging petunias. This year they are back but it was too early for the plants so its just a hanger with leaf mulch in it. Last year we continued to water the plant and the birds were fine with that. Only once did I accidently nudge one and she flew off to do the broken wing dance - but she was back shortly. We have a nice digital record of it. This year I'm also keeping a written account. What fun!

Then THAT'S the answer!! I actually saw a sharp-shinned hawk a few weeks ago (first time I'd even seen one in our woods -- I was very pleased to be able to identify it). I didn't see this altercation until the two birds were "wrestling" in the snow and I'd have sworn it was one of the mourning doves atop the jay, but your theory makes much more sense. Whatever it was definitely carried the jaw off -- poor jay (and I don't love jays) dangling by its wing and squawking frantically. They both dropped into the snow (for a better grip?) a short ways from my garden, then took off again and only by chance (or an extreme fight by the jay or maybe, my frantic yelling??) did the jay get released. The jay flew back to our pine tree and seems fine. Is that possible? To get hauled off into the hair, hanging by one wing, and still live to tell about it? Amazing! Just curious, how large a prey will a sharp-shinned hawk take on? What about a small cat? Do I need to worry now that I know there's a sharp-shinned in the area? (My cat goes out midday, never out for long ... maybe I'll keep him in?!) Thanks so much for the information -- I am positive you are right. Now I feel guilty for blaming the doves... :(

There are no restrictions on hunting WW doves, they are an invasive species. You can shoot/trap/hunt them anytime of year in any number. Maybe a nice stewed dove dinner is in the works? The Inca or little Mexican doves should be starting to migrate about now. I have all 3 year round here. They seem to take turns at the feeder, first the WW, then the mourning, sometimes the Inca are mixed in with the first 2 & sometimes they flock in all at once. The feeders will be deserted then every bird in Galveston shows up, then they all leave. How the heck do you NOT feed them & feed the others? Tally HO!

I'm a little confused; I've had Mourning Doves all winter, and they were here last winter too. Are they seasonal in Falmouth and MetroWest? Or is it just a question of nobody spreading seed on the ground for them?

I also have trouble with "it's" - I just keep reminding myself that "it's" is an abbreviation for "it is". This often works for me (but not always).

If we have mourning doves, I haven't seen or heard them. Wikipedia says they rely on feeders in the north in winter, and since I don't have those, I guess I don't have doves. Lots of robins and cardinals this winter, but the doves are either absent or in hiding.

Like Claire, all winter (and last) I've had Mourning Doves clustered underneath my bird feeders, enjoying the seeds that more airborne birds dispel. When my dogs run outside, the doves grudgingly fly up while complaining with their creaking noises. They come back down soon.
I wish I had lots of cardinals and robins. . . have only a few, but I am so glad to see them. The robins particularly seem like Spring.

Like others, mourning doves have been here all winter is western Massachusetts. I have had a good number of robins enjoying the dreaded oriental bittersweet berries most of the winter. The cardinals are shy and like the early morning or just before dark to show up.

The wood peckers love the suet.

We don't put out seed and I don't know if they have been "around" all winter, but they arrived back in their favorite nesting place last week and look like they will set up housekeeping again.

So I guess I should have said that our mourning doves are back to nest again.

We don't put out seed. Where I live the bears have a field day. Every once in awhile we will put out some suet high in a tree.
