UMass Landscape Message January 12

UMass Landscape Message January 12, 2007

Some encouraging news concerning winter moths:

Cape Cod Region: "Winter moth adult emergence dropped off suddenly in mid-December, making it hard to predict what spring will bring in the way of caterpillars."

Southeast Region (Hanson): "Winter moth adult moths began to emerge in early November and appeared to stop emerging by mid December, which was different from previous years."

This confirms what Rockman reported in a post on December 27.

"I also noticed a collapse in the winter moths a few weeks ago. I have not seen a single moth in weeks--which is a surprise given the many warm damp evenings we have had lately. Maybe this is good news on a more regional basis? We can only hope."
