Dying Coral Bark JM photos, pls help

My Coral Bark JM is dying from the top down. The wood turns a greyish-black and drops the leaves. It is planted in clay soil amended with compost and gets full-sunlight. I planted it in Spring of 2005 and experienced some leaf-scalding, but no wood issues until this spring. It looked good last year.

There is no evidence of any kind of insect damage. My local garden center hadn't seen this before (I showed them the same pics) and recommended giving it a fungicide drench if I didn't figure it out.

Do you have any ideas what's going on and what I can do to save my favorite tree? I'm reluctant to start dumping chemicals until I know for certain it's not another issue such as sun exposure. THANKS
