Too Sunny for Coral Bark Japanese Maple?
Comments (5)At least it's not a "dissectum" leaved variety. Who knows, you could try it...or plant it under another large shade tree as was suggested so it is protected from 10am to 5pm. Alternatively, you could build a shade structure for it in the initial location you specified, but that is not something I would especially want to do. You will often see nurseries have constructed lath houses where they keep their maples for sale. I've not had the "sango-kaku" but I do have an "Emperor One" which is indeed planted in full sun...it receives some shade during the afternoon when the sun passes behind redwoods that tower nearby...but the break is less than an hour. This was its first season out and the leaves faded to a dull green/yellow before turning red recently. It is looking good. I'm in the Bay Area. "Bloodgood" is another large leaved variety you might consider....pretty common though....See MoreA. japonicum 'Sango Kaku' X (some red laceleaf)
Comments (3)Two more pictures at the URLs below- I don't see the way to post more than one through Gardenweb in the same thread. http://pic10.picturetrail.com/VOL343/1802724/3609338/120496492.jpg http://pic10.picturetrail.com/VOL343/1802724/3609338/120496491.jpg...See MoreConcerned about Sango Kaku (Coral Bark)
Comments (2)I'd be concerned about it being under watered. Winds can have a desiccating affect on foliage and that could result in the spotting/discoloration of the foliage. Newly planted trees need good bit of water, especially when planted at this time of year. As long as drainage is good - very important - the soil should stay consistently moist. I would dig down next to the rootball and feel with my fingers. The soil should be moist to the touch even with the base of the rootball at least....See MoreCoral Bark Maple (Sango Kaku) Large Green Leaves - Reversion?
Comments (3)If the growths look otherwise like those of the rest of the tree, with the same coral red stem color do not worry about it. It is normal. Japanese maples have a main flush of growth in spring, and then after an interval other shoots tend to appear in summer....See MoreFuad Efendi
