Too Sunny for Coral Bark Japanese Maple?
Comments (5)At least it's not a "dissectum" leaved variety. Who knows, you could try it...or plant it under another large shade tree as was suggested so it is protected from 10am to 5pm. Alternatively, you could build a shade structure for it in the initial location you specified, but that is not something I would especially want to do. You will often see nurseries have constructed lath houses where they keep their maples for sale. I've not had the "sango-kaku" but I do have an "Emperor One" which is indeed planted in full sun...it receives some shade during the afternoon when the sun passes behind redwoods that tower nearby...but the break is less than an hour. This was its first season out and the leaves faded to a dull green/yellow before turning red recently. It is looking good. I'm in the Bay Area. "Bloodgood" is another large leaved variety you might consider....pretty common though....See MoreCoral Bark Maple Sango Kaku: how increase red bark?
Comments (17)Pretty difficult to answer :-) In general, most newly planted trees and shrubs require NO fertilizer and ongoing needs will depend on your existing soil conditions. If you have doubts about your soil's fertility, have it tested. FWIW, I fertilize only those maples I grow in containers - inground maples get mulched, period. Also impossible to say how often or how much to water - that depends on climate, siting of the tree, and soil conditions. Japanese maples are not very drought tolerant so even established trees may need periodic deep watering. Newly planted trees should be kept moist - not wet - throughout summer or until fall rains commence. Best to test the soil physically by finger down next to the root ball - it should be just moist to the touch....See MoreNew coral bark maple suffering
Comments (0)Greetings. I planted this coral bark jm about 6 weeks ago. I read about best practices at a nursery website. I amended the soil with 1/3 compost, 1/3 peaty mix, and 1/3 the native soil which is sandy. The tips of the branches seem to be dying back. Should I be concerned? Thanks!...See MoreShaina japanese maple flanked by 2 coral bark jm: how much room aroud?
Comments (9)Ivan, I think it is taking it down a few notches to introduce the alternating pattern of plantings. The look seems unsophisticated to me. (Not to say that an alternating scheme is always impossible. Sometimes, pulling it off relies on proper scale and usually involves radically different plant types.) I think you'd be much better off to use a triad grouping of coral bark and a line or single of the other. Too, I think you should be thinking of the CBM in a tree form, not in a shrub form as the above computer image appears. Ultimately, it's canopy is going to be above the fence rather than in front of it....See Moremainegrower
