Japanese Maple, Coral Bark

I'm needing lots of help these days. Bought and planted a 4-5' Coral Bark Japanese Maple in June. Have it under drip irrigation. Leaves are drying up and turning brown. Is this ok or is it too early? We amended the soil with cow manure when planted, but lots of clay in the soil. Soil has been damp each time we checked over the last week or so with the rain we have had. We have been reducing the drip and turned it off yesterday. Can too much water cause the leave to dry up like this and be brittle?
