A Sport We've Not Yet Registered - should we?

Look at HL for Wheaton Blue. As all too often, the pictures are so very varied, but perhaps that's indicative of the variation found in different growing conditions, although I believe it's at least as indicative of the differences between all the early digital cameras, but that's another whole discussion, and certainly not reasonably under the control of the wonderful Bob who gives so freely of this unequaled resource of visuals for us hostaholics.

All that rant aside, here's a picture of a sport of H. 'Wheaton Blue' that has been growing for over a decade here, and I'm thinking of starting the process of registering it, since it certainly has enough maturity to likely ensure that it is stable.

The Boss, errr, my hostaholic wife, has had it labeled Hosta 'Wheaton Blue Glory' ever since she divided the sport, and I'm a big proponent of giving Hosta sports names that give homage to their lineage. Then again, sometimes it's appropriate to diverge, and this post is an invitation for you to comment.

Hosta 'Wheaton Blue Glory', or so it is as yet named:

I hope the forefront planted 'Sweet Cicely' companion plant provides a size reference. This plant is more than a yard across. Another size comparison reference could be taken from the 'standard' sized label stab?

Also, since so many new introductions are 'copy cats', don't feel restricted about commenting that it looks 'too much like H. whatever'.

hh, can you show me more of the leaf. I do like the colors and the fact that it does not cup. Very nice looking plant. Very cool looking. Refreshing. Have a great grow day, but it looks as you already have, Paula

Mid 70's here all next week but the night time temps are deadly! 33 degrees on Sunday night forecasted here in Plumas County. Already some of my plants are complaining. Cordovamom, yes, I think it was your story that gave me the idea for the contingency in the first place! But I chickened out in the end. I've seen the waste removal services, but when I was half way into it, it was kinda like "no stopping now, might as well get it done." Live and learn!! Roselvr, I know the plates are here, just haven't gotten to that box yet (murphy's law says it will be the last box I unpack! LOL). The only thing we forgot were DH's vitamins and prescriptions (I never go in that cupboard and thought he grabbed them himself). As we drove to the old house to pick them up, my DS started crying, "No, new house! Wanna go new house!" So needless to say, he loves our new house too, and the very kid friendly back yard has to be his favorite (complete with some pretty roses to replace my old!). He settled into his room right away, even with the cold he started on moving day! Our dog is another story, he's still pacing a lot and whining when I leave. We had to pull his crate out of storage so he'd feel like he had a "safe spot" in the chaos. He's not too thrilled about the dog run yet. We let him go in the main yard the first 3 days until we got the run cleaned, but I'm sure smells remain. I might have to topsoil it afterall. Thankfully, it's gated off, so our DS doesn't have access. Hope things work out well for you as well and your DH feels better soon. I agree, everything happens for a reason and certainly feel completely satisfied with the way our "adventure" this past year ended up. :+)

lynn: Your cherry office sounds wonderful. Are they built-in or freestanding? I can't wait to share pics!! I'm also wondering what to do for chairs since we have hardwood floors. It would work best to have chairs with castors so we can roll out of the way when we need to open the drawers, but am worried now I'll scratch the floors. rmkitchen: Ah, gentleman's closet, yes something like that. Who knows it'll have all our files, charging station, etc. DH wants it to go to the ceiling so my new idea is to do that and split the difference between ceiling and top of window molding (which is about 12") for the other cabinets. Would you mind posting a pic of your taller cabinets? I'm also wondering how it will work/feel with the huge upper doors (about 56"H)? Sort of like pantry doors sitting on top of a desk. I could td two stacked cabinets instead, but that will cost more, plus make the space less flexible to store larger items in adjustable shelves. Perhaps she could break up the look visually by making it look like one door is stacked on another. Does that make sense? I should probably go back through the FKB to see what the taller doors look like. Also with the taller cabinets, now the shorter base seems out of scale. Where it'd be really nice is for the two cabinets between the desks, but would be odd I think to do 2 different heights. I can't quite comprehend how these drawers eat up so much space with the glides, framing, etc. I'd at least like a drawer to store envelopes there. I can't quite get it as I have it in my freestanding desk--top pencil drawer, middle for envelopes, bottom of files--but it's a shorter base. I may have to loose the notion of a trash cabinet and just put under one of the desks--which I suppose there is room towards the back area. Anyway she'll come tomorrow and I think for the base, I'll see what she recommends will work best for the area where the cabinet butts up to the step and carry that look everwhere.

Finally able to post here again. Probs with using upper case letters in my user name. Even so when I tried to log on this morn. first few times I was asked to register as a new user then with exactly the same user name and password i was able to log on??? Don't mind being asked to log on in order to post - it happens in a lot of forums - just so long as the bloody log in system works. Re mummsies security alert when visiting this page. If you keep your eye on the status bar as this site loads you will note that we are served data from DoubleClick.com. This company a well known advertising server on the web. Probabaly giving us a dose of tracking cookies to watch our journeys across the net - all the better to serve us ads based on our net preferences. Reasonably harmless but some anti spyware tools (Pest Patrol especially) identify this as spyware and give you a security alert. Can I just suggest a cooling off period whilst things settle down and shelve all talk of setting up alternative sites. Seen this type of thing happen a few times on forums I've belonged to. All these splinter sites do is dilute the available number of posters, split the communities into less functional, viable and interesting sub groups and then usually collapse through lack of interest. Would prefer things as they were but would hate to see this place denuded of some good posters because of the ham fisted efforts at "improvements" by the curent owners. Maybe they'll learn something from this little debacle - I hope so. Larry

I don't have the expertise to know how close it is to any other hosta, but judging by the plant itself I would say, register it.

HH, it is a nice leaf design, I would not mind to buy it somewhere. It certainly is more distinct than 50% of all the hostas on Hosta Library.
I agree, Bob Axmear has done a great service to the community to have created and maintain the Hosta Library. I hope he received in the past an award from the AHS for that.

Can you give us a closeup of the foliage, and tell the differences you see between this and H. 'Paul's Glory'? Since Wheaton Blue sported from Pauls Glory and this comes from Wheaton Blue, it appears there are some similarities, and I am trying to see where they differ. Thanks...it is a great looking plant.

Nice Plant. Seems very similar to Paul's Glory, I assume your were thinking the same thing. How does it compare?

Hi Mark,

Since all the Wheaton Blues originally produced are just solid culls from the TC process of Paul's Glory you have to think that this may have just been a bit of Paul's Glory that was still part of a Wheaton Blue cull. As was suggested, compare this to a few different Paul's Glory to see if there are any significant differences (there are a lot of variations of Paul's Glory out there too, and the coloring of the center will vary quite a bit depending on the lighting) but I think it really is just a very well grown Paul's Glory. If you put a piece of this in some more sunlight and it turns more yellow then I think it is spot on with Paul's Glory. If it is always more greenish, even in some sun, then you know that it is different and then you could register it.

Essentially I'd try to establish exactly how this is different from Paul's Glory and go from there. If you can't tell, then I'd say to skip this one for registration.

HH, what did you decide to do with your Wheaton Blue Glory?
Did it turn yellow or stay blue in more sun?

Just was gifted with a Wheaton Blue and was researching it when I ran across your older thread. Chris' remark about Wheaton Blues "being solid culls from TC process of Paul's Glory" intrigues me. So I'm assuming that not all WB will be alike. Wonder what mine will grow up to look like. I'll put it near my Paul's Glory and watch color changes.
