Here we go again-we've turned the corner

and heading for that grand finale we all so eagerly anticipate-The Christmas Flush.

Well some of us anyway-

It's nice to see the roses looking like magazine covers again.

My two best Summer thriver's were a couple of old reliables

Queen Elizabeth and Heirloom.

ok so... I guess I made it sound like I did really poor maint. I change the oil every season, airfilter as well. I normally leave it in a shed or under a tarp. The battery until a week ago was a agm(lasted 3 years, cost $78) , I just put a new battery in it to test. The oil from the change earlier this year still looks perfect. I am going to try and get it running. However in the mean time I bought a used with only 27 hours and less that one year old Country clipper Jazzee with a 20hp B&S and 38 inch deck. I got it for almost 1200 off what a new one would have cost so I think I did ok. This still has a joy stick, which is what I was used to... but also has their fabricated deck that slides out from under the mower for easy maintenance. This years mower would have had a khoelor(sorry for the spelling) which is probably and upg on my engine but for the difference it seemed like a no_brainer. So Rusty I totally understand your comments. While it had been in the rain plenty of times over it's lifetime, that was not the norm. The big question I need to find out is whether our dog, Ghost will approve... he likes to sit in front of me on the deck when I move it around the yard. He has done it since he was a puppy and now at 100 plus pounds he is fairly insistant. I dont mow with him tho since I am too afraid he would fall off, which means very bad things could happen.

Hey, Claire, It sounds like your bank is as secure as it can be. There isn't much more you can do but plant and plant and plant. Roots Have worked for thousands of years and they will continue to work for thousands more. I talked with my Brother who works in Chatham last night. He said the tide was so high that several homes were in trouble. The town DPW (?) had spent the day dumping sand at several locations, trying to creat a buffer until the tide went back out. They are the same locations, or whats left of them, that lost homes in the storm of '93 (?). That was the Nor'easter that took 9 or 12, can't remember which, homes. Homes that had stood for generations. The waves, tide and currents were so strong that it caused the break in the sand bar that had protected that part of the shore from the open ocean. When that sandbar was breached, the protective buffer was lost and the homes fell into the ocean. There was much talk at the time about building sea walls and rock jetties, but in the end, enough people came to the realization that there was nothing that could be done to stop the sea. It was decided that, what was to be, would just have to be. No sense in fighting with Mother Nature...she will always win in the end. Interesting studies have been done about the reality of building rock jetties and what it does to a beach or shoreline. Nature is awesome. So keep spitting those watermelon seeds over that bank! You never have to worry about taking excess vegitation, cuttings or clippings to the dump! Lucky you...we have to pay by the pound to get rid of ours. Sooey

thanks cathyck! Good luck in your house build, I remember how many details need to be decided in a short period. Where in Rockland are you? We hired companies to spray the gunite and to plaster the pool (although we don't love the plaster job, my husband has been sanding it while using his scuba gear!) but pretty much everything else was done ourselves. Although we have saved a bit of money, its still pricey. We are happy because we have been able to upgrade all of our materials and to really customize to our specific needs. We've changed a few things on the fly. I'd say just the pool is around 50k (including the fence) - which doesn't include landscaping, decking, the curved brick walls or the staircase coming down to the pool, the bluestone stepping stones, the eventual pavilion and outdoor kitchen, furniture etc etc etc. In my head I'm hearing cha-ching, cha-ching ... I actually don't like thinking about it all together! There seems to be an endless way to spend money in and around the pool, but we feel the investment has been worth it so far. We've been able to see many of our friends and family over the summer as it was so easy to hang at the pool. That's why we can't wait to make entertaining easier with the pavilion. I think a lot of the reason SD's mom and I have reached the point we are at (which has stepped back from the sharing a hide-a-bed days, but is still okay) is because of this forum. I learned to see things more from her point of view. I was able to see all that she has missed out on (caused by her own choices and actions, but I digress) and how that could turn her into the person she is now. I think of how hard I fought to gain custody of SD and then imagine what it would be like to loose it. . . then I multiply that by 100 and imagine if I were her bio-mom. I learned that as bad a mom I may think her, there are others who make her look like Mom of the Year. I realized that I wasn't alone and not a Horrible Person for the thoughts I had about her. I was able to let go of a lot of my hatred and re-direct it as sympathy and understanding, for it is usually the miserable that aim to make others miserable. You don't see a lot of truly happy people trying to make life difficult for everyone around them. I learned that considering myself a failure because I couldn't make this woman like me was about the dumbest thing I'd ever done - if I dislike her on so many levels and for so many reasons, why in God's name would I want her as a friend?!? Truly, I owe this board credit for a bit of my newly found sanity. Now we'll see how long it lasts.

Some places it's very much fall like. We southerners just live in a time warp.

Won't be long and we'll have some great weather to be outdoors in.

It was cooler this week, but back again to summer next week. The gardener was just about to throw in the "trowel" when it cooled down to the low to mid 80's, so at least she got a few days respite.

In New Orleans it's still in the low 90's and the roses are really small. I prune lightly labor day week and feed all of the roses. The hybrid teas are slowly putting out new growth but the minis are rapidly growing and blooming. In October they will start really blooming and will do so until Christmas.

I don't know what's going on here but I'm seeing blooms the size of the spring flush now..and the fall flush is still anticipated. It's been a weird one this year. I'm wondering if the hot, dry spell kept the fertilizer I appled earlier intact until now. Hey, Pete..got pictures coming to prove it! We don't usually get a Christmas flush..but Thanksgiving can be very thankful.

I'll have to wait for more global warming for a Christmas flush. Meanwhile the only Christmas flush I get is in my bathroom on Christmas day.

LOL! No rain in sight...Unless I get the sprinklers out, I won't have any flushes. Perhaps I should take my 'bathroom flush' and dump it outside.

The Christmas Flush. I need to move to Florida.

My biggest feat is a few stray blooms that are open on Halloween. After that forget it.

Mid 70's here all next week but the night time temps are deadly! 33 degrees on Sunday night forecasted here in Plumas County. Already some of my plants are complaining. This afternoon I intend to start yanking annuals in anticipation of what will probably be major cold damage in the garden starting over the weekend.

The chimney sweep is coming Monday night to get the woodstove ready for winter..,
