Transplanting A Bloodgood Japanese Maple

tjski

I have a Bloodgood Japanese Maple I planted 6 years ago from a 5 gal container and is now about 9 ft tall. I would like to transplant it to another location in my yard. I have several questions regarding this. Is it ok to attempt this at the end of March / beginning of April? What size ball do I need to keep with it when I dig it up? Does this tree have mostly surface roots and thus I do not have to dig too deep when removing it? Thanks.
