Oriental Lily bulbs

I'm a total newbie and decided that I wanted to plant a lily this year in a pot (confined to an apt. balcony). I planted the bulb the first week of June. The package suggests planting time is between Mar and May. How long does it take for the bulb to sprout. I haven't seen anything yet. Will it not come out until next year? What should I do?

Do you know what kind of lily you have, like oriental, asiatic, trumpet, etc.? What was it's size (i.e., 16 cm.)? It will probably put forth foliage this year, but you may not see blooms until next year. Depending on the type of lily you purchased will determine when it will bloom. Can you give us a bit more info?

Oh, sorry about that. It's an oriental lily (Meno star), and it's size is 16/18 (written on the package). I'd appreciate any advice you have.

They should transplant fine. Just try and take a 'clump' instead of individual plants. Orientals flower later in the season and have lots of time to adjust. If they are crowded and need dividing it migh be better to tease away a few smaller bits and discard them. If, however, they are crowded and a solid mass then transplant the whole bunch. You can thin them out in fall after flowering and they've reabsorbed nutrition. Water after transplanting but then let them survive on their own unless things get real dry.

I planted about 12 Color Parade from wild's about a week ago. I forgot to mix bone meal in the bottom of the hole, marked where I planted them. I just checked, and they are orientals. When should they start showing and what can I do to make up for not putting bone meal in the hole? I have some Beaty liquid kelp, regular Miracle Gro, some Miracle Gro bloom booster, and Osmocote. I'd be more inclined to use the kelp but not until they come up and grown some. Certainly wouldn't use but one of the fertilizers. IF they come up which is a big if because I stored them in the fridge until the bed was ready and some had green mold (think a little of that is ok) but some of the bulblets were blackened which I scraped off, should have treated them with something but just wanted to get them in the ground.

You mentioned that you all in idaho still get frosts until the first of june. So if the lily bulbs are not yet sprouted I say you could plant them right now and that will allow the bulb to establish a root system. However if it has started to sprout already it increases the risk of frost damage. A late frost can kill the plant, or stunt the flower growth.

Prcooled before planting?I haven't heard of that,but maybe that is if you plant them in the spring and are expecting blooms the same year.Go ahead and plant them now.They will get the cold needed this winter and will bloom for you next year.

That sounds like a pretty good sized bulb. Since the orientals are already blooming, odds are you won't have any bloom this year, but you should get the foliage at best. Next year you'll have blooms. That's not to say you won't get blooms; it's possible. I planted some orientals in the late spring last year, and a few of them bloomed, maybe just one bloom or so.

I don't know if you can force bloom them inside or not. Any other opinions out there? I've never planted one in a container before. Lilies do like well-drained soil, and to dry out a little between waterings. They are bulbs and too much water will rot them. On the other hand, I've seen my lilies take a lot of abuse from mother nature, and they don't seem to mind too much. Lilies like their feet in the shade and tops in the sun, like Clematis. I don't know about potted lilies, if you should mulch the pot, or set a lot of pots around it might help keep the roots cooler.

I planted my lilies in march and just know i get flowers my question now is I know they are growing like second bulb from that bulb, but i also get other kind that the stem is getting like many little bulb, I do not know if this one going to multiply that way?
