need help with planting methods for asiatic/oriental lily bulbs

Hi,

We live in northern Idaho. Usually plant hardy vegie seeds the first of may and the corn and beans around the 20th of May. It often frosts until the first of June. I planted lilies last year for the first time. I started them in pots and then transplanted into the flower beds when they were about 10 inches tall. They did great and bloomed well. This year I have a bunch of new bulbs and I'm wondering if I can just plant them in the ground without starting them early. Also, do pocket gophers eat lily bulbs? I do have one area that is pocket gopher free because it is bounded by cement on three sides and a road on another. Any advice you have will be appreciated. Thank you.
