Last April I posted this pic of hubby digging me some holes for my new expanded bed.

What a difference a couple of months make! These pics were taken 2 weeks ago.

Thanks, everyone. I broke every nail, hobbled like an old woman, smashed fingers, bled and scraped my fingerprints off, walked on my knees to pond with big rocks I couldn't pick up, and loved every minute of it. I still haven't figured out how to hide the filterfall box just yet, but I will. I have many plants I want, and some that need planting right now. Long view of my vision will likely take a couple years minimum, but it will get there along with the rest of the yard.

Thanks again everyone for the very kind comments! As far as breaking the 11th commandment, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's pond, well, I'm very guilty of that one. It is all the pics on this site that I've examined with almost stalker-ish fanaticism that has given me so many ideas and inspiration! Okiee-I'm using a 20 watt Pondmaster UV light and a discontinued filter that I got for very, very cheap (the Hozelock trinamic). The filter is rated for ponds up to 3000 gallons with heavy koi loads. As my pond is only about 1200 gallons, I think it's doing its job of keeping the pond very clear! LOL I oversized the filter because I know that my pond is overstocked. Lisa - I am going to be adding a 500 gallon addition to the pond this fall to hopefully give the koi some extra breathing space to grow. But, I know that because of the small size of my pond - even with the addition - I will have to likely have to part with some of my koi eventually. A local cafe/pottery shop/artist's retreat has several ponds with koi. I might ask them if they want some of my koi if they outgrow the home I can give them. I'm also planning on hooking up with some other local water garden societies so I can meet people who may welcome some adopted koi. I just want to make sure they go to a good home someday. But, before I get ahead of myself, I probably should just try to get them through a Wisconsin winter!! LOL (see my post on overwintering koi under thick ice)

Facebook is great for sharing with friends, but is a terrible place to post photos you wish to share with a broader audience. I'm on facebook, but the only way I can see your photos there is if you leave them open to the public since were not "friends" there. Personally, I leave hardly any portions of my profile open to the public on facebook, for security reasons, and, well its my personal profile, and mainly people I am friends with on there, I know personally in real life. I'm not sure I would want strangers / the general public to be able to go through all my personal photos which also contain photos of close personal friends either. Probably a better place to put them for the purposes of sharing them on places like Garden Web, or any other public forum would be a free photo sharing sites like Photobucket, Flickr, or Picasaweb. That said, I too look forward to seeing your photos! Please post them here! As the old message board Icon saying goes... "THIS THREAD IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT PICTURES!"

Dining Room or ?????? (warning: lots of confused babbling inside)

Thank you guys so much for all the advice and inspiration pics! I'm still confused, but now I have stuff to think about! Part of the problem is that the room is not very big - about 11.5 x 15.5. My piano is a 6'5" grand, so basically, if I move it in there, there's no hope for fitting in a table or dining area (though I'll be freeing up the living room for a "kids table" if I need it). There are a ton of doorways and windows in the room as well which might make building shelves a little difficult. I'm going to post some old pics because my camera is broken and there are all I can find that show the dining room - maybe you guys can guage better than me (I'm terrible at space planning) what I can actually fit into a room like this. Here is the dining room looking towards the kitchen. We have since closed that pass-hrough window, so now that is a solid wall. That corner is the biggest expanse of solid wall and measures about 5 ft x 7 ft (the former pass through is the 7ft wall). The drywall patch for the pass through still needs some help so this might be a good place to put built ins, LOL! The table you see off to the left is the farmhouse table I had purchsed for the dining room - it has leaves you can insert to make it longer so at the smallest (shown) it measures 3 ft x 5ft and it expands out to a little over 8 ft long. I'm not set on using it - I'm sure I could resell it if I decide to go with something different. This is the rest of the room. There are two windows on the left wall, with about 46" of wall space between them. The corner cabinet is currently living in the far left corner (again the pics are old so it's not there -- and I'm amazed at how many more toys we have now than when these pics were taken - eek!!!). The computer desk table is not needed downstairs and can stay or I can sell it or use it on the screen porch. The wall where the computer desk is measures a little over 7 ft and the adjoining corner wall is a little less than 4 ft. So the corner cabinet can move to any of the 3 corners shown in the pics (the last pic was taken from the 4th corner, which is where the doorway is to the kitchen in the first pic). Any suggestions for where to put built in shelves, a small but expandable table and/or a 6'5" piano are most appreciated! I am, as I said above, awful at spatial stuff - I can't picture anything until I see it in real life. So all guidance is most welcome!

At first I laughed at the power equipment being used to make holes. Then I realized it was brilliant because you don't have to do any digging.

I have some just like them--several years old! They were just dug up for a sidewalk (finally)
and I'm looking around to see where I can put them. Trust me--I'll make good use of them!

If you don't mind, I might save a few of your pictures. I have a wooded corner of the lot that would be much improved by using some of your ideas. I can just imagine having a glass of lemonade and listening to the birds while sitting in your garden! Thank you for showing us.

Thank you for all the compliments. I'm finished with it for this yr, but next yr I plan to do something about the lawn furniture sitting in mulch. Not sure what to sit it on and still keep the woodsy/natural look. But for now it's done. I'm pretty happy with the results, but I don't think I'll hang up my stethoscope and give up my day job & go into landscaping. lol

Nicely done - and if you can rent/borrow an auger and make something like that happen - it is easier on the back and now very easy on the eyes.

How about some of those square red cement stepping stones, placed directly under your seating area? I've done that with a park bench, placing them under it and in front far enough for the feet to be out of the grass! I'm thinking to enlarge it to a significant seating area. I like the red, because it seems to stand out less in the grass than the conventional *gray*! And in the mulch, the red would definitely complement it better, IMO!

Thanks, Janice, that's a great idea! I could get some cement paint and paint the squares to match the color of the mulch.
I need to do some rearranging of the hostas too.
For one thing, I want to plant my new Grand Marquee where I can sit and watch it grow. It is awesome!

Scar, Oh yeah! That auger is the only way I make holes these days!

Mary, make sure that you post pics of your new creation when it's finished. I'd love to see what you've decided to do with your wooded corner.

It's lovely....
I would put an area of free standing ( no footings) cedar decking under the table and chairs.
I wouldn't stain it, just let it go natural. It won't last very long before it rots....maybe 4 to 5 years....but it's cheap ( relativly) and would look wonderful and be easy to move the chairs on.
Perhaps set the decking on redwood stiles that would be in contact with the ground.
