How long do cut amaryllis flowers last in a vase?
Comments (6)I don't remember the cost, Maria--just more than I'd pay for cut flowers. The one I cut is a four-year-old bulb I have that blooms reliably every year, despite the neglect it receives from me. It was a gift. Everyone gives me red amaryllises, even tho I ask for other colors, because I am sick of red after Christmas. I cut this after I posted and put it in a vase as part of a Valentine display. I love it--just hope it lasts at least a week. Thank your for the tip about changing the water every day--will do....See MoreOT: Do you cut the flowers from your perennials?
Comments (14)My reason for having a garden is to have fresh flowers in my house and in the garden. I start the year with a small vase containing my miniature irises, Scillas, libanoticas etc. Then I move on to tulips (in the house now)specially planted for this reason because the squirrels will get them. Later I get loads of Peonies, perennial poppies; roses, irises, and daylilies. Dee, if you cut the daylilly stem with all the buds, they will open one day at a time in the vase. Delphiniums, phlox, and Heleniums are other favourites, and this year, I'm looking forward to Lupines - I've had good success WSing them this year. And then, the asclepias - there are more than I thought....See Moremy cut peonies do not last for long in the vase..
Comments (6)Cut them in the early morning while it's still cool. Take a bucket of tepid water to plunge them into as soon as you cut them. Allow them to drink and hydrate for a couple hours and then recut and arrange them. Remove any foliage that would fall below the water line. Replenish/replace the water and recut the stems every day - they're big drinkers in a vase. Regular fridges are not a good idea as most of them are designed to remove moisture from the circulating air which causes damage to the petal edges. Better to not bother unless you have a regular floral fridge with a humidifier installed. Jim...See Morethundersweet and others -- where do you do your cutting?
Comments (10)I have only used heavy wood cutting boards and I'm not going to change now so I guess either I quickly include a pull out into our cabinet design -- which doesn't really appeal at this stage -- or I plan to live with it on the counter. I realize that even if we do use the island for cutting -- a whole novel idea that doesn't sound very novel to most people, I'm sure -- what I wanted in this kitchen was a place between the sink and the stove where washed vegetables get cut. I specifically didn't want to be moving wet and cut vegetables in my hands between an island and a stove because that's what we do now and it drives me crazy (and makes a mess of the floor). I already had to compromise by having a corner in between them. Somehow putting a pull-out cutting board in the aisle space between counters and islands seems crazy because how can anybody walk around it comfortably while you're cooking? Yup, I don't see how that works at all....See Morephyl345
