How long do cut amaryllis flowers last in a vase?

I am starting to see amaryllis flowers at florists. I mean cut flowers, not still attached to the bulb. I am thinking of trying that with some of mine. Does anyone know how long they last in water? Has anyone tried this? Some of the red flowers would look gorgeous in a Valentine's arrangement and I'd like to try it.

Ginny...that would depend on the variety. Some would last at least 7 days and some would last for 2 weeks. Cooler temp. would make the flowers last longer and changing of vase water everyday helps a lot.

I'm just wondering, how much did they cost?

I don't remember the cost, Maria--just more than I'd pay for cut flowers. The one I cut is a four-year-old bulb I have that blooms reliably every year, despite the neglect it receives from me.

It was a gift. Everyone gives me red amaryllises, even tho I ask for other colors, because I am sick of red after Christmas. I cut this after I posted and put it in a vase as part of a Valentine display. I love it--just hope it lasts at least a week. Thank your for the tip about changing the water every day--will do.

Calvin I agree it was probably a change in growing conditions because the blooms last quite a while. Here is a picture of my two equestris in a group shot. Both of these are young seedlings blooming for the first time. The one on the left is from Oak Hill I purchased this winter - please note the two spikes. I was ready to cut the spike off after it bloomed for a while but the second spike appeared so I let the plant decide what it wanted to do. The one on the right is one I purchased last summer from the hybridizer. Both equestris spiked and bloomed at the same time. They have been blooming for months and the spikes are still quite short but I have plenty of buds remaining. If the spikes get long and ratty, they must bloom year round. If your spike was totally removed, I wouldn't expect it to bloom again until early spring, which in Canada is probably June :>) I hope you get your cochlearis and remember to bring a companion home with it. How long do hibiscus seeds last in a bed?

Well, I will start another thread sime time soon and include pictures of the original 2 hibiscus once they got full sized about 2 years after planting, and what they look like now. The 3 that I am growing now are the same color flowers as the original plants, even though these came from seeds off of the old plants and were pollinated undoubtedly as a cross between the reds and pink flowers. They arent quite blooming yet, and that makes them at least 2-3 weeks later than many hardy varieties, but they make up for it with LOTS of huge blooms and a long bloom time. At this point they are on their 3rd season since I replanted them as volunteers 2 years ago. They were popping up all over different beds for at least 2 seasons, maybe 3. I didnt actually notice volunteers popping up until about 2 seasons after the original hibiscus plants were removed(because they were way too large and spread out much more than just about any hibiscus plants I had previously seen). Those original plants didnt survive the transplant due to too many roots being severed, because they grew outwards many feet in all directions, and it wasnt prudent to try and dig up a 5' to 8' root ball just to get the outward growing roots in one piece! I have cut back several stems on the largest plant, and yet there are still at least 12 or more very large, thick, long stems left, that are growing outwards in all directions. I had to practically remove an entire side just to prevent them from crushing the 5' Zinnias behind them. Thats another aspect to this story: The Burpee zinnia seeds I buy(Giant flower mix) also grow much larger than advertised, and this year they are getting even taller than last year, as I saw a couple flowers above my head by at least 8" just 3 days ago, and the rest are at least 4.5 to 5 feet tall now, even though they were 2 feet tall a month ago with hardly any significant lateral branches. They are advertised to grow to 30-36"....... These plants are in a front yard that gets at least 11-12 hours of direct sun per day right now, so shade isnt the cause of tall growth, besides, they are also very thick stemmed, which wouldnt be the case if there was a lack of sun.

That is a Tall Bearded iris. What its' name is I do not know. The most common iris in arrangements are Dutch Iris. Florists don't really like Tall bearded iris for two reasons. 1. They don't last very long individually. 2. They tend to bleed color, sometimes staining valuable table cloths etc. We always have Tall Bearded Iris on our table during bloom season because we enjoy the bloom and fragrance. We just address the stain issue by not putting them where they might stain something.

Your very welcome Ginny. I know what you mean about getting tired of red after X'mas. I had amaryllises blooming inside the house since last Thanksgiving and I make it a point to alternate my bloom colors from red, white, pink, green, salmon etc. by planting the bulbs at least a week apart. They keep me busy but very happy during the cold months. Hope your cut flower last long.

One more tip: Cutting the pollen from the flowers help them last longer too.

Thanks for that tip too, Maria. I wondered about that. I always cut the stamens off lilies but wasn't sure about amaryllises. I will do that right away. It is now Tuesday and the one I cut Saturday looks gorgeous. Another bud has opened so it doesn't seem to mind being in water in a vase. I cut two more from a white one this morning, for a different vase. So pretty!

The flowers that were open a week ago are beginning to look tired but another is open. So for this cultivar, I guess a little over a week is the answer. In case anyone else has the same question.

Thanks for the tips and letting post my question.

It is the first time I plant amaryllis, but I let the flowers in the stem until they died, but at the very base of the flower (not the stem) are growing like little bulbs. Now my question is, could these little bulbs left from the flowers be planted and how long should I let them before cutting the stem?
I am afraid to cut the stem and then lose these possible amaryllis bulbs.
