More pics I took in my yard today (Christine)

While I was walking around my yard to take citrus pictures for Willy, I decided to take a few more. My garden was getting much too much shade lately with 8 medium sized oaks getting bigger each year. I asked my husband to remove some this weekend. Unfortunately, one was a little taller than we had hoped and when it fell it hit the corner of my garden. It flattened the fence, but the irrigation risers were spared. (Yeah!) Some of the Swiss chard got crushed, but it'll grow back, especially now that the plants will get more sun.

Here are a few pics of veggies in my garden: red potatoes and a row of raab, early mizuna. I hadn't grown this raab before and I realize that I planted too much of it. It grows like a weed! Great in salads.

Here is a row of red Russian kale. This is my first time growing this kale. I will plant them closer next time.

I tried a new variety of collards, Vates. They have a smaller leaf than the Georgia collards. From the picture you can see that I still have too much shade.

Last year, a new variety of poinsettia was released that really caught my eye, Ice Punch. After the color was gone, I repotted it to a larger pot, left it under the irrigation and mostly just forgot about it. Well, when it colored up this year I noticed it again.

I'm envious of all that space you have there.

I have to say that I've never seen a poinsettia look as good as yours that didn't come from a greenhouse!

Congratulations, Chris, on some very nice plants. I caught the Dyckia bug a couple years back courtesy of Chanin's wonderful photos posted here and elsewhere. While I primarily grow species, some of which are planted out in mixed beds (tourniquets & surgical disinfectants, ahoy!), I have to agree that a lot of both these and their hybrids do tend to look extremely similar to this "untrained" eye when grown side-by-side. What complicates the issue here is that they are incredibly plastic with regard to color & contrast when conditions soften up during the rainy season and winter. In this respect, they are akin to many hybrid Neos. The very dark lamina color and contrasting pale spines that are well-illustrated in the first post here are really only evident for about half the year. Flowers are, I admit, a very nice touch that get surprisingly short shrift from growers. All of the material that has flowered here thus far this year has been open-pollinated either by hummers or insects, so it looks like I may have my own 'Brittle Star' and 'Arizona' F4s weeding the yard soon ;^) I grow a fair number of Hechtia species (ironically, only one of which is of the eight or nine natives)and find that they do really exhibit marked summer and winter colors both in captivity and in nature. For example, much of the Oaxacan material from in or around the TehuÃ¡can Valley, thence down towards the Isthmus of Tehuantepec that can sometimes be a vivid canary yellow with bright red spotting along the leaf margins during the dryest, brightest months of the year, fade to a nondescript gray-green towards the end of the rainy season in northern hemisphere Fall. Oddly enough, I have found that some glossy-leafed hechtias reliably burn rather severely every year in late December/early January in spite of remaining in the same location and orientation year-round. Unlike dyckias and orthos, the few Hechtia species that have showy inflorescences, such as matudae, are rather unassuming when not in flower. J

Hi Karyn, the second pic is of a gardenia... this type of gardenia grows into a small tree, it is already taller than i am! The second to last pic is of a torch ginger! There is also the red torch giner, but i dont have the space for it because the leaves are just too bushy, and it doesnt bloom that much. I have never seen the white torch ginger in real life but online it looks so nice. Thanks everyone :)

Steve, I thought this would give you a better idea of how large Squash Casserole is (and did divide it last year). Here is a another hosta for camparison, this is Elegans which has been in this spot for 8 years. Karen I would say the average age of most of my hostas are anywhere from 4-8 years. I did have the advantage of having some great local growers, so I often bought mature hostas. TJ I did want to kick the hosta hater right down the street! LOL Jen

Thanks so much for sharing pictures. This time of year (especially after my long absence from gardening) there's not much to show in my yard. I'm happy to see that your veggies look so healthy, shade or no shade, and that poinsettia is gorgeous!

I enjoyed seeing your yard very much! (Are all those bananas in the background of the first picture YOURS?)

WOW Christine, that poinsettia is amazing! Ain't nothing shabby about your veggies either....You have a great place, looks like your backyard is bigger than my whole place :-)

I'll soon be cutting back my Jeannie Moragne plumeria, twelfth post here, if you're interested I'd love to trade a cutting of my JM when you're ready to take some cuttings from the Ice Punch.

Thanks for sharing your lovely garden and yard with us. I had been admiring your other posts with the yummy citrus and beautiful butterfly/hummer garden. Now, your veggies look great too.... and I'm a sucker for good looking, healthy soil! Looks like you put a lot of love into that space. I would love to have vacant space to scheme and plan more stuff. You are so lucky. Don't forget to keep showing us your new ventures, aye?

Marcia---Yes, those banana plants are mine. Here is a picture I posted last July showing my newly planted 2 dozen blueberries. The bananas are behind them. The pummelo tree is to the left.

Anna---I do feel so lucky to have my 2 acres. I just love to be out working in my yard. Sometimes I stay out there all day.

coffeemom---I almost forgot to mention, you got me laughing! My husband isn't into gardening, but he will do the heavy work that I am not physically able to do myself. I leave the tree dropping to him. As for my powers, my powers are that he says that he benefits from the veggie garden. He will eat the vegetables but he won't eat any fruit except the oranges and pineapples. I would like to say peaches but the squirrels get them first.

Tom---That's not my back yard--it's my front yard, near the street. My house is located toward the back of the property. My yard is designed backwards. I don't mind because it does help with privacy.

Tom, I would love to trade cuttings. I can root the poinsettia for you first before mailing it. I realize that the plumeria doesn't need to be rooted first. Today I got some tree dahlia cuttings that I potted up. If you are interested in one of those, I can include that too. The mother plant I saw was 5-6 feet tall. It is a background plant for sure.
