Overwinter hot peppers

I been looking here and on the Hot Pepper forum and cannot find the info I am looking for. I have a couple of Datils and chocolate habs that have pods on them and want to know what is the best way to keep them going over the winter. They are in 5 gallon buckets so I am moving them in and out to protect them from the frost. In colder regions I have read that some trim the plants way back and keep them inside all winter, but being in zone 9a can I keep the plants as is and just keep them from freezing or do they need to be cut back and rest over the winter. What produces a bigger plant and more fruit ?

Hot pepper plants keep growing and producing. I say don't cut them back or you'll lose productivity. Have you checked out thehotpepper.com It's the best forum for serious chili growers.

Actually I think you could do well going either route. What the guys further North do by root pruning and cutting most of the plant back does a lot to stimulate strong new root growth and over all health to the plant.

I have a jalapeno plant from last season in a three gallon pot that is looking pretty bad so I'm going to try doing the severe pruning top and bottom and re-plant it with some fresh soil. I figure there's nothing to be lost by trying.

I also have lots of seedling chillies that are struggling with all the cold we are experiencing. They will be coming in each night until this latest cold blast is over.

A lot of cross pollination questions on the site right now. Most years, I grow a pepper patch of mixed sweet & hot peppers - with the two often directly adjacent - and have not observed any heat in the sweet peppers. I don't entirely discount the possibility that crossed seeds might possess some heat... but sweet peppers are not generally eaten without cleaning them. If there were such heat, I would expect to feel it or smell it during cleaning, which has not been the case.

I overwintered an eggplant last year, a Black Beauty. It never seemed to take off when re-planted in the spring. Also, I suspect that it overwintered some pathogens since all my eggplants seemed to get hit earlier than usual last year. However, last year was a bad year all-around in my garden, so who knows. I'm in a warmer climate anyway, so I have a pretty long season for eggplant. It may be more worthwhile where you are.

I had that happen one year as well. I pulled off and discarded most of the infected foliage - look for the small discs on the undersides of the leaves, and then sprayed the entire plant with dormant oil spray, once a week for a month. The oil is about the only thing that will kill / smother the life stages of the little things. New growth starts up, and you shouldn't lose the plant. The best way to look at it is if you don't do something drastic, the problem will get worse, and spread to your other plants, and you have all the makings of a regular gardening nightmare. Those things are awful. I got to the point I could spot a white fly on a stack of lemons in the grocery store from 10 feet away.

I do it all at once and never even had a plant look distressed after I repotted it. Typically, they will go into a kind of dormant stage for a little while after it and just do nothing. Then one day you will notice some new buds popping out along the branches and soon, you will be pruning it back on a regular basis to keep it in check while it waiting for the outdoor growing weather to return. IMO, overwintering is about getting them through the winter to the next spring. I am not trying to produce peppers and have my plants full size when spring comes. You could, but then, why prune them back at all. I am just trying to get them through to the spring and in the mean time, no have them take over the entire house. By the time spring rolls around they have a great root structure again with new hungry roots and the top is already fully established with green shoots all over it just waiting to get going.

If you have enough light to provide your plants, you can keep them going indefinitely.
In fact, if you want to get those pods to ripen, you'll need to leave the plant intact.

I've ripened peppers indoors, and they just aren't as piquant or flavorful during the Winter.

Don't stop fertilizing, either - just fertilize at reduced rates: half or quarter strength,
depending upon how frequently you water/fertilize.
