Hi...It's been awhile!

Hello everyone! I haven't really been on GW in awhile, mostly lurking on occasion. Chris and I stopped doing a lot of heavy propagating and purchasing about a year ago, content with what we had and have been exploring more in the woods and doing a lot of hiking. Chris rediscovered an orchid in Fakahatchee Strand back in the spring, we did some ghost orchid photography and really, we've been into photography a lot more these days. So, life has kept us busy!

That said, we're going to be moving in a few months, away from Florida. So, we have a large collection of plants to get rid of. I can't say the "S" word here but that's what we need to do. If you are in the South Florida area, we are in west-central Broward, we are looking at Sat the 21st to be an open garden day. I know there used to be an email list around, someone collected them at some of the swaps we went to, or else I'd use that to get the word out. We got a lot of plants originally from many of you.

If you are interested my email is mistiaggie at yahoo dot com and I will forward you our address, time and date and eventually a decent plant list. We have orchids, bromeliads, plumeria, agaves, and a variety of interesting plants, plus a 10' ylang-ylang we started from seed.

I will be checking in on the forum from time to time, to see what cool tropicals everyone is growing. I'm really missing tomato season this year. :(

How can you leave Florida. She needs you. Who will look out for her interests? Who will take care of the orchids?

I know I've posted your Ghost orchid video here at least twice. It's an awesome video.
You and Chris will be missed.

Hi there, I think I may have some gerbera daisy seeds at home and perhaps some left over tall pink snapdragon and mixed color baby snapdragon seeds. I'll need to check when I get home. If you had a clean slate, what would you do?

I was faced with a clean slate when we bought our first house this summer. The backyard was paved with stones and the only planting was a tree. We ended up putting in 4 raised beds, two meter square ones aND two border ones because that is all the space that we have. But the raised beds are wonderful for the following reasons: 1) limited bending, no working on hands and knees. They are quite high, 60cm and would be good for an older person with limited mobility. 2) raised beds put plants out if the "danger zone" of our male dog 3) easier soil amendment. It was simple to develop a great planting medium and to put in the beds, avoiding the sandy and rocky soil left underneath. 4) Smelling the roses! Raising them brings them closer to nose height and you get to enjoy the wafting fragrance all the more! Also, they are right at eye height from the garden bench, so you can really enjoy them close up 5) less weeds than before 6) avoids pests like rabbits, if that is a problem where you are 7) raised beds allow for neat and tidy paths for pets and people. We use pea gravel between the paths. Downsides I think in this initial stage is more watering. In the raised beds I think they may have some evaporation from the sides. Also they will probably be more prone to temperature fluctuation, kept warmer in the summer and colder in the winter. But in any case, I would highly reccomend raised beds for roses. You could even put them in the backyard and it would be no trouble at all for your dog to navigate.

Where are you moving to Misti? We're really going to miss you & Chris. I guess the real estate slump is over cause you & Trinigemini both had good luck selling your houses! Send me an email with your addy, I'd love to come by the "s" :)

Its definitely improving...there is hardly anything for sale ...everything is under contract. Crazy market.

well, we don't own, been renting since we've lived here. Not sure where we will end up, probably back in Texas, but we have something planned first, but I can't say anything yet. ;)

I will definitely miss a lot of our tropicals, but I hope I can press the zones elsewhere with some things!

So, once we do our 'thing', then settle down, find jobs, finally start popping out some kidlets. Chris hit 30 in September and I'll be there in the summer, so you know, tick-tock!

Personally, I could never leave Flarda, but sometimes folks hafta do what they gotta do.

Uncertain how far you are from Anna Maria Island (Bradenton), but I'd like to give it go for the 21st. :)

Trinigemini, where are you that there are no houses, all under contract? There are plenty of houses here in PSL; foreclosed, short sales, just plain for rent or for sale.

I missed your post when it first appeared because I haven't been on this forum much in the past few months myself. I'm sorry to see you go and hope that you have a wonderful adventure planned involving exotic places, secret orchid trails and fabulous pictures! Let us know!
