Newbie canner needs tips / tricks!

I'm such a noob that I haven't even canned yet. But I have a bushel of apples, some half-pint and pint jars, lids and extra lids and rings. My FIL has canning equipment at his house, which is where I will be early tomorrow morning. I'm thinking apple butter, Apple Pie jam, maybe a little apple sauce.

I have 12 half-pints and 12 pints. Will I need more or will that be too much? Am I being too ambitious for a first try?
