Is liquid loss w/ whole tomatoes(cold pack) normal?

First of all, thank you to everyone who so willingly answers my newbie canning questions!

I canned a batch of whole tomatoes and noticed that the water was boiling out and dripping down the sides when I took them out of the canner. When they had cooled and sealed I noticed quite a bit of liquid loss. I am assuming this is because I cold packed the tomatoes, but I have never had this happen using just a BWB before. I thought I had done a good job removing the air with a plastic spatula. Could this happen if I didn't leave enough head space? I know I didn't leave too much, but maybe the opposite. I really packed the tomatoes in because they shrink when I can them, and I didn't want too much shrinkage. Thanks!
