New Pineapple Plant Connection!

My neighbor down the street works for Jason's Deli. His roommate was over the other day admiring my bananas and asking how to grow them. He spotted my few pineapples and said he want to try growing them too. I told him it's getting hard to find just the tops..he waved his hand "DONE! I'll have Jason bring some home for you!" He brought me 3 beautiful tops yesterday! YAY!

Wow! That's great! I used to get mine from the grocery, but they get most of theirs topless now, and they toss the others without taking the tops off. I am lucky, because my neighbor has a mini-pineapple farm at her house. She started with ten tops from Publix a few years ago, and now she's overrun with them! She leaves the pups in to grow more, and plants the tops . I have 6 now that I got from her, finally got a spot for them, and they're doing well. Can't wait for fruit!

Its hard to tell without a pic, but its probably sun burn. It should grow new leaves that are normally colored. I thought my pineapple was dead because its leaves were all spotted with lots of black and gray (after complete neglect indoors to a point where I forgot it existed), but some more water and full sun was enough to make some healthy green leaves grow out from the center. Now Im wating for it to replace the old leaves so it looks nice and healthy again! -Alex

No problem. Those plants look very nice. Did you plant them out already? I made the mistake and waited two weeks before I planted out my last set and there was some rot. They all have survived thus far but I think they would have established faster not for the rot. Also, be careful when removing them from the test tubes. The first time I pulled on one and the leave popped off. Now I stick something down the tube to break up the agar before I pull on the plant. I think I might try tissue culturing myself one day. They sell tissue culture kits available online. Anyone in the forum ever try to micropropagate plants?

I think it's funny our "neighbor-Jason" works for JASON'S lol, too bad he ain't the owner. I am going to have him stagger bringing three at a time home so I can stretch out their fruiting and development time.

If you happen to be in a hurry I was at Ikea this weekend and guess what they are selling? Yes, pineapple plants!! I thought it was kind of weird but interesting! Sometimes they have strange little plants that you don't see often tucked in with the regular stuff!

Could someone please tell me what conditions pineapple plants prefer? I recently potted up a top from Publix and it is growing! I guess I need to read up on how to handle it, but I thought I'd go the easy route and just check with the hands-on experts here.

If my neighbor's yard is any indication, they like it anywhere. She has them growing in sand, manure, sun, shade, all over and they all bear and do fine. I think ideally, they like full sun and lots of organic fertilizer. Mine seem to love the horse manure I'm feeding them.

Yep - they require nothing. Mine are under a palmetto in regular ground (sand), with no fertilizer, and no water except rain and they are very happy.

I planted the top of a really ripe pineapple but in the cutting of the fruit, discovered hundreds of little brown seeds. So I saved a few and planted them in a mini-greenhouse. It took about six weeks, but they did germinate and I now have a dozen plus little baby pineapple plants waiting to be transfered into their individual pots.
My question is - how shall I get them through our NE FL winter? How much protection do they need?
Same goes for the tops that are doing well in ground. I've heard that this coming winter is going to be colder than usual. cora
