Pineapple Plant Help

Hello Everyone,

Im new to the website and also new to growing plants and such. About a year ago I bought a pineapple plant and I have kept it inside for the winter since I live in New York. While inside it looked a beautiful green on the leaves. Once summer started I planted the pineapple plant in a pot and put it outside to get some natural sunlight. Ever since its been outside its leaves have gotten darker, almost like a dark brown (not burnt). Does anyone know what could be the cause of this? I water the plant every couple of days, any ideas?

Its hard to tell without a pic, but its probably sun burn. It should grow new leaves that are normally colored. I thought my pineapple was dead because its leaves were all spotted with lots of black and gray (after complete neglect indoors to a point where I forgot it existed), but some more water and full sun was enough to make some healthy green leaves grow out from the center. Now Im wating for it to replace the old leaves so it looks nice and healthy again!

One of the problems could be cold night temperatures. Pineapples come from NE Brazil where night temperatures never fall below 15C 60F. In early/late summer in NY temps can fall below this. Keep it indoors in a sunny position all the year round. - Ian.

It's probably too late for edible fruits. They should have nice big fruits growing already, but you can enjoy the flower if you're lucky. Try putting some cut up apples in the lower leafs and see what happens.

Why not just let the baby grow up in the same pot? As you note, pineapples are a pain to repot! The red color is a sign that you are giving it a good amount of sun; it is normal and even desired for them to get this color. I am not familiar enough with pineapples to say exactly how much water they want but I would not let the soil get completely dry. If you are in a dry area, as most of California is, I would water twice a week unless the soil is still moist.

I agree with what the others have said. I've got about 5 fruiting pineapples now. The mother plant will die when the fruit ripens, or whenever the fruit is taken off. It's normal for a lot of people to just take the top off the fruit, put it in soil and with only an occasional watering you'll get a plant out of it. The base of the mother plant should produce a few suckers which should also develop into mature plants. When the fruit smells sweet it's fully ripened. Commercially they're picked earlier so that they travel better. Giving them occasional doses of weak fertiliser produces a better/larger fruit, although that's too late for yours now.

My Yuzu tree also has fruit, but I have not counted how many. I also have a bottle of Yuzu juice that I have not yet opened. Yesterday I went to TJ's and bought two pineapple plants. I'm not sure how much sun to give them - the pineapple plantations I've seen were growing in full sun in the tropics, but when I put my other pineapple plant in full sun, the leaves seemed to get a bit burned, and so I put it in partial shade. The tag with the plant said "bright light" but also indicated that it could be grown indoors if you are not in zones 9-11. I put one of the new plants in full sun (see below) and the other one in partial shade, next to the other pineapple bromeliad. I will move the one in full sun if it starts to get burned. Lars
