crab apples??

I am looking for a recipe for canned crab apples. Something similar to spiced apple rings. I don't want a recipe that includes vinegar. The whole thought of vinegar and sugar together really just turns my stomach.(sorry)

Can anyone help me out?

They won't be like spiced apple rings without the vinegar. The only other option would be to can them in a syrup with sugar and cinnamon or red hot cinnamon candies. Can as for canning regular slice apples.

You may find some info when you do a search for the key words, 'canned crab apples'. They do need some kind of high acid liquid if canned whole. That would also be with seeds, stems, skins, and the small blossom end thats also attached.

If the grafts take it should work fine. I have done it lots. You tend to get a grab bag of rootstock vigor...mostly high. But if you don't mind that, it can be a great way to get a more develped tree for free. Take you time when you dig them out and you can take a lot of root. most of the ones I have done I left in place. When I have done it on stuff this size, I have topworkerd over multiple branches higher up. I don't know how long a big cleft graft like that takes to heal up all the way.

Just a quick follow up, the fruit is about 2 inches thick, and was very firm to the touch (and to open) when I pulled one off. Trying to figure out what I need to make off limits to the pets/newborn. Thanks! Josh Z.

tree hugging aside .... trees.. IN THE GARDEN... are and should be.. as disposable as any other garden plants ... if you dont like them... or they are irritating the beegeebees out of you.. just get rid of them ... lifes too short ... and as you note from experience ... you arent going to beat ma nature with money ... you may delay the inevitable.. but you wont win ... so just cut the equation short.. and get rid of the problem .... just invest in the removal.. and skip the boat payments for the tree sprayers.. lol ... actually.. they dont have time for boating.. probably snowmobile money.. the off season .. lol .. ken

Give yourself some time to read up on proper pruning technique- it's easy to ruin a tree if you make poor choices. Aesthetic pruning is an art as much as a science so take your time and study up. Many nurseries used to offer pruning classes pre-covid, I'd look for something like that or a good book to help you understand why you are cutting where and how each cut affects future growth. When the day does come for pruning (I like very early spring for this so you can see what you are doing) take your time. Stand back, have a vision, and don't rush. I spend way more time standing and staring making my decisions than I do cutting for sure, lol. But you can always come back the next day and take more off but once you make a mistake it can take years to grow out.

Or in addition to Linda Lous suggestion, there is always crabapple preserves - no vinegar in that. Otherwise I fear you are up the creek without a paddle if you don't want any vinegar.

Some of the best relishes and pickled foods are a combo of vinegar and sugar. ;)

Make crabapple jelly if you want a sweet treat. If has to be one of the best tasting jams or jellies around
