What's your hybridizing plan?

Here's another one to get some discussion going.

If you are raising seedlings(whether you made the seeds yourself or purchased them) what is your goal, what are you trying to get and how is it going? Let us all know!

This is my second try at hybridizing, the first time didn't work. Last summer I made 4 crosses, 2 of which took. I think the others failed because of the weather. It was either to cool for the pods to really mature, or to wet and windy and the pods rotted. The ones that took were crosses between Dramatic Apricot Ruffles and Persian Shrine and Little Grappette and Swiss Mint. I'm just hoping to get some nice crosses. I'm not really expecting to much but just want to see what I do get. Persian Shrine is a tet and the cross with DAR worked so now I know that DAR is a tet. I haven't been able to find any info on that daylily. I've tried Tinkers but they don't have it listed. Marg

That's great Marg. I am still at the experimental stage too. I will have seedlings blooming next spring and can't wait to se what they turn out like. I enjoy experimenting and want to learn what happens colorwise etc. I really like Spiders and Unusual forms and would like to see different eye patterns on them.
How about some others - I know you have seedlings!

Of the floribundas, I have a three-way tie.... HEAVEN ON EARTH..... My bush of it always looks great; good disease resistance here, large full flowers of apricot/peach, almost always in bloom. QUIETNESS.... Hardy, disease-free here, flowers profusely, GORGEOUS form and color; easy to grow PINK ROSETTE.... very free-flowering, easy to grow, blooms last a LONG time and hold up through rain & wind; cute as a button.... MY FAVORITE HYBRID TEAS ARE... TIFFANY... (not only because its my daughter's name) but it smells wonderful...the color is drop-dead gorgeous...its perfect form is undeniable. ALOHA.... can be a climber where its warm....healthy and hardy.... beautiful two-tone blooms... POPE JOHN PAUL II.... smells delicious....perfect form.....purest white Celeste

If I'm remembering certain things correctly, and if I understood what I read in the first place, the history of what is commonly called 'Hippolyte', is even more confused than that of 'Reine de Violettes'. There was something about the rose that was being called 'Alice Vena' turning out to the same as a 'Hippolyte' imported from Europe, and who knows why they had the names they had in the first place... and currently 'Alice Vena' isn't at all the same rose as 'Hippolyte' and doesn't seem to be the same 'Alice Vena' as was described in that article, and the word 'thornless' is conspicuous by its absence in any of this. It is good to keep in the back of your head that in the mid-20th century, when most Eastern found roses went into circulation, that they didn't tend to use study names, but very badly wanted to connect historical names with living roses. It started with Mrs. Keays, who was dealing with a distinctive enough set of roses that she could get away with it, but when it wandered off to the cold climate once-bloomers, things got hairy. The contemporary descriptions of so many of these roses are practically identical. Gertrude Jekyll, who knew and understood roses, had Village Maid and Rosa Mundi hopelessly confused. You won't confuse photographs of those two, but the written descriptions are a different matter.

My customers don't seem wowed by lots of sweet pepper selection the way they are with tomatoes, so this season I stuck with just 3 varieties (Carmen, Pritavit, Gathers Gold). Two of these varieties are F1 hybrids and one is an OP. Surprisingly, I didn't see any difference in production between the varieties. This is not in any way to negate what Jay said above, he's mostly right. I just want to offer something based on my experience working on a few organic seed farms. I apologize for my long winded response. Based on field trials I've participated in, the belief that F1 hybrids are ALWAYS more productive is not often the case. It takes years and years to select for the many factors that make a great pepper (taste, yield, disease resistance, etc) Being that there's more profit to be made by creating a privatized cultivar that's not easily reproduced (F1 hybrid), the large seed companies can afford to spend the production time it takes to come up with an awesome variety which they can make big bucks on (remember when that white eggplant was $1.50 per seed!). It takes a very altruistic and dedicated seed farmer to put in years of selecting work and then just release their OP variety which anyone can reproduce. Frank Morton from Wild Garden Seeds spent years breeding Gathers Gold sweet pepper and helps to show that even on slow growing pepper plants, well bred OP's can rival the F1 competition. Jimmy Nardello's pepper is another good example. I'm mostly saying this because I think it's important that we don't just write off all OP varieties in favor of hybrids and that breeders like Frank get our financial support whenever possible. -Mark

Gray, Well, you're right, I should have figured out the "guy" room. My buildings were not dioramas. I built on 1" scale and recreated both exterior and interior. The project took me to New Zealand and spent time there with a historian responsible for maintaining the Antarctica expedition buildings. The history and stories of the men living in these "huts" became a passion. Sadly, the cost of finishing this project became out of control and didn't get a grant applied for. It is part of the many boxes I cannot let go of...building shell, books, tons of materials. Small house, but big shed storing part of my life. If you were to build your plans it would be amazing how the project would become so much more real for you. The hard work for this has already been done with the created plans shown. All could be built with matte board, I'd even suggest buying it in the colors you are planning. The simplicity of yours would even allow the furniture to be done...but use bass wood or plastics for these. You wouldn't need a lot of tools and the cost minimal. I let go of the model building a while ago. Was doing some freelance for a magazine submitting projects, and it became too commercial. The ability to be creative was lost as I had to design what readers were interested in and freelance is what it means "free" after cost of materials and time involved. My art is now photography mixed with chalk pastels. Primarily close ups of architectural details and lost items found. I like those that show time passed and the affect of element of nature. Use Photoshop and am playing with possibilities of printing large format now. Creative beings cannot let things sit long without evolving into more. The jump in computers is so beyond that what can be done on a lap top is far more than where I started. Me presence at the time put many an architect and engineer into shock...they had to let go of their pencils for keyboards. There is still a need for the high end number crunching computers for engineering and output. My son and I were talking one day about terms which he wondered the meaning of..."do not spindle, punch or staple". What was a spindle? This evolved into talking about learning computers via punch cards. The leap you mentioned...he also trained on computers using punch cards and is in his late 30s. I'll let him feel old. They do use metal framing here, but not often and I don't understand the reasoning for continuing to use wood when this is avialable. On the total opposite of what you are doing I would build a straw bale, the natural "off" of walls, etc. intrigue me. It is not something easily built depending upon where one is located due to permits. Even building a home smaller than a specific size isn't possible unless rural. One can remodel a smaller home, but tis the closest to getting such within city limits. Gads...the Platters? I just watched a Johnny Mathis special and headed into the personal past. And most of this was totally off topic, but at we are in the conversation side.

I don't do Tets and am not familiar with the ones you crossed.

You can try the AHS's on line Database:http://www.daylilies.org/DaylilyDB/
If you don't find the name, try searching for all registrations by the hybridizer.

As for your Little Grapette X Swiss Mint, you will get several nice offspring from this cross (I have used LG with success). Crossed with a near white you should get a range of colors from near white to lavender and pink.

Thanks rebecca47. That's good to know. Now I can hardly wait! I'll check out the database. The woman I bought DAR from didn't have any info on it either so I don't even know the hybridizers name! Marg

marric, Dramatic Apricot Ruffles is not the name of a registered daylily. The AHS database shows there's an APRICOT SUPREME RUFFLES, which is a Reckamp-Klehm from 2003. Maybe that's what you have?

Hi, Just to chime in. I grow Dynamic Apricot Ruffles bought from Garden Import in Ontario. It is an unregistered Klehm Late to Mid, blend of orange fading to boldly ruffled yellow edges. Highly recurved, light yellow apricot sepals, 22"tall, 6" bloom. I seem to remember it as having a fine garden presence.....cheers, lloyd

When I bought DAR from a lady here in Ontario, she imported from Song Sparrow Farm. She told me it was called Dramatic Apricot Ruffles. I hadn't really started to collect daylilies then and had no reason to ask for more info. When I started to get more interested in them, I started to try and find more info using DAR as the name. I looked up both daylilie names you guys provided and I am pretty sure it is Apricot Supreme Ruffles, the throat on Dynamic Apricot Ruffles doesn't looks different. (I'll try to find a pic and post it.) Now to wait and see the results of my cross, an apricot color and a wine color. Should be interesting! Thanks. Marg

I just started with whatever I was growing, which in 1972 were escaped ditch lilies I found along a road and an unidentified small red that I think may be a species although I've never been able to find a picture that resembles it. The woman I bought it from said the small red had come from Europe but I haven't a clue. It's bright coppery red, small, very vigorous and one clump has been in the same place since 1980 when I moved, and still blooms. I then learned (hybridizing is a learning experience) that Europa is triploid and the very devil to get seeds from although the pollen is easier than getting pods which still elude me. But I did get seedlings from the pollen of wild daylilies and that got me started. I kept adding old diploids year after year, mostly historicals and species and I really don't know anymore how many I have. Probably less than a hundred but I'd hate to try to count them. Since after 1988 I would start a bed of seedlings every year they began to spread in all directions and I may have a thousand seedlings but I can't even find them all anymore. The darn things seed themselves as well and I have some of my prettiest seedlings popping up in the goldenrod from heaven knows what parents. This becomes a problem when one is a real beauty and there is no way to figure out it's parents other than a DNA test on Maurey. I seem to form plans from what results and try harder to label my crosses but I'm still pretty helter-skelter.I like species crosses and am trying for close to H rosea species using Nesmiths selection and an unknown that may be Rosalind or Charmain. Looks like picture of Charmain on Tinker's data base. Have a couple of hundred seeds-will have to live three or four years to bloom them outside in this climate. I have several old spiders and a bee pod seedling has great quilled petals so I will continue with that line using Orchid Corsage but I'm not too sure about crossing gold with orchid!! Also I crossed two lates back around 2002 and got a row of late orange reds. Used pollen from a well known variety on the narrow petaled late and out popped a wide petaled, ruffled red---another line to persue need to find out how to post pictures on this forum--------------WEedy

I would love to see your pictures. You have to put them on Photobucket first.
It sounds like you have many plans going. It sounds like you keep an open mind and go from there. I think that is a good idea. If you are looking only for one thing you might miss something great that is staring you right in the face. Do try to keep your crosses labelled though. It helps to know what worked so you can use it again!

Plan? Enjoying what I am doing comes first.

The plan only comes after I come up with something good and so get to say "oh, that? I was trying for something exactly like that!"

Marric, there is a landscape nursery in Wisconsin that was selling 'Dramatic Apricot Ruffles', so your name is likely correct.
