Transplanting of native lupines

Hi all...in Tallahassee here..has anyone had experience and/or luck with transplanting the native lupine? The common name is the queens crown lupine. It grows along the roadsides here, sandy mixed soil, full sun. Leaves close to ground and are a silvery color and velvety. Has multiple flower stalks with flowers ranging from a pale pink and pale golden color with some pale grey or "silver". Its quite a magnificent plant. I dug up a few in early summer that where in bloom and transplanted to my yard. Kept the single long root in tact. Dug a relatively deep and wide planting area for it and back filled with some of the soil that it originally grew in. I watered it in a few times and let it die back naturally. the flower stalks then looked as though they went to seed (a soft feathery ball ). Hoping it comes back in the spring. Has anyone transplanted these?
