I don't grow chaya but I know Michaels4gardens in Orange Springs, Fl. sells it so I put the link on for you. I bought a few hard to find edible plants & seeds from him.
I have grown chaya for years! I got my original plant as a cutting from a generous GW member. They root easily and are great for attracting butterflies. You can eat it [I haven't!] but you need to boil it twice to remove toxins. Here in Central Florida it does freeze back to the ground but comes back bigger and better each year. I really like this plant so a few cuttings go into the greenhouse every winter just in case something happens to the "mother" plant. Are you far from the Ocala area? I just happen to have one rooted plant that I started last winter that really needs a home!
I also got mine from great GWers. I have two kinds and have eaten them both. I only boiled the leaves for 15 minutes. (tastes like spinach) They grow to the size of trees. When you prune you can stick the branches in pots and they'll grow or you can leave them on the ground and they'll still grow. If you're not close to Susan I can send you some cuttings. LMK.
I had a beautiful "tree", but I am very allergic to the leaves and broke out in a terrible rash every time I pruned it, so I finally took it out. So be aware it might cause a rash on you. :o)
Pretty plant! Someone gave one to my daughter - it's all rooted and ready to plant but she didn't want it and passed it to me. Where does it want to live?? Sun? Shade? near a fence? In the middle of a yard?
I have one that should have been dead years ago...it's not in the ground! It fell out of its pot and I never put it back in. It's been laying on its side growing bare root for two years. LOL I tried eating the leaves, but I didn't like it, so I just grow them ornamentally now. Where are you? I'm in Sarasota County, and I'd gladly give you the miracle air chaya.
Does this plant have little white flowers? When you cut a stem, does it have a milky liquid that seeps out? I have been told that it is edible but also heard that if it has the white liquid, that it would be poisonous. I break out when my Jasimine's white liquid touches me.
