I am starting my food forest and can not afford to purchase retail seeds/plants of all the perennial edibles needed. Most of the nurseries that sell the varieties are hours away so I turn here. I am looking for plants, cuttings and/or seeds for the following plants: Cassia Goji berry Fig Mulberry Comfrey (the sterile kind) Ashataba Tree collard (this one especially) Sugarcane Guava Moringa tree Jamaican cherry (aka strawberry tree) Molokia, Chaya or Okinawa Spinach Any other edible you think might work. I have for trade the usual suspects as far as annual vegetables and a red salvia that the beeds/hummingbirds love. Gary is right someone in Melbourne gave me a stick,I drove around with it in the hot car stuck it in the ground and now have many from just the break and stick in the ground method! They make a nice fill in quick plant!

If you like "greens" you will enjoy Chaya. It is firmer than spinach, but not as tough/chewy as collards. Chaya is great used instead of grape leaves to wrap rice/meat mixtures, in lasagna, and in soups. As a veggie alone, I like it with grated cheese on top. Chaya responds well to pruning. I chopped mine down to 3' stumps a short time ago, and it is now over 10' tall and very lush. The three-lobed variety is the main one I have eaten. I've had some of the multi-lobed leaves mixed in, and didn't notice a difference.I didn't strip the veins. The younger leaves are more tender, but you can use any of them if you plan a longer cooking time. Should be delish with ham hocks and a dash of vinegar when served. Yummy! Wash your hands well after picking. The sap can be irritating. The leaves are supposed to have stinging hairs, but mine don't. Lisa

My mexican sunflower looks like your chaya and will be chopped soon. I also lost a banana that was ready to flower. "sigh" No banana split for my birthday. At least I think that's what happened. The kid next door said it fell over unto their yard so he chopped it and dropped it back into mine. Oh well, went out and chopped the blossom off and will be throwing it in tonites asian inspired salad. (If I poison myself is it considered a hurricane related death?)
