Is it too late to prune Gardenias?

Pruning keeps plants shapely and in scale with the landscape. Pruning should be done just after the plant finishes blooming. Pruning after October 1st decreases next year's blooms.

Research in Florida suggests that a combination of long nights, low temperatures, and wood of the proper age aid in bud initiation and development. Pruning should be early enough to allow new growth to be at least 4 to 6 inches long by approximately October 1. Young plants, growing vigorously during their first year, may be pinched once in June and again in August to encourage heavy branching.

Yes it bloomed already this year but wasn't sure I it would again. Very scented gardenia shrub just really overgrown and never pruned correctly. I was hoping to give it a fresh start.

on a recently transplanted plant .. of just about anything .. i would give it a two or three SEASONS .. to regrow the roots cut off .. before i came to any conclusions on how its growing ... my presumption is that all the work is going on.. underground ... growing roots ... and eventually.. the plant will follow.. field of dreams and all ... with some lack of roots ... every leaf is a food making machine.. so i would leave all that are there ... to process sunshine into plant food ... to grow the roots ... [and i would NOT use fert as a replacement] think in shrub time .. not our instant gratification world of.. one season ...they were moved in may.. a short 3 months ago ... and you are wanting instant gratification ... just give them time.. imo ... pix are always a help .. but i dont think.. in this situation.. it will matter ... ken

why not rejuvenate it.. rather than coppice it???? this is an annually aggressive grower.. and if you cut it down ... then all the aggressive growth.. will be on top of the trunks you leave.. and sooner or later.. it might fall apart ... if you posted a pic.. you might get better info ... ken

if you have more than on plant .... just shear one of them .. and see what happens ... experimenting is fun ... and most often.. you will remember the lesson learned next year.. whatever it might be ... of course.. being lavender ... i would probably dry and harvest the fragrant parts cut off .. else.. what is the point of growing it ... put a little sachet in your step ... see what i did there.. lol .. ken
