Comments (6)The KitchenAid attachment is only a single strainer type, useful for the tomatoes to make only a sauce with no seeds or skins. If you want a salsa, as mentioned, chopping the tomatoes will give you that. The other option is to use a similar machine, the Villaware (Roma) with their salsa screen that has 1/4 diameter holes. Even for that size, the salsa is only slightly chunky. If it were me, I would only use the KitchenAid attachment for tomato sauces, or for extracting juices from berries with medium size seeds....See MoreKitchenaid stand mixer... keep or not?
Comments (21)You should note that depending upon the model KA you got, it may or may not stand up to a daily kneading of bread dough. The smaller models are designed to handle stiffer doughs only once in a while, but not every day continually. As a mixer for cakes, icings, cookie dough, etc., the KA is a kitchen staple. I have one of the old 4-qt Hobart-made KAs and I would no more get rid of it (despite its awful color) than I would trade my DH, lol. Be aware that the KA mixes so well, mixing times in many recipes have to be adjusted. If it says beat for 5 minutes, I beat for 2 min. Don't walk away when you're beating whipping cream unless it's only 2 steps and you're coming right back....it will be butter before you know it. I will say that I've bought two accessories that have made the KA perfect for my needs, over the last 35 years. First, I have a second mixing bowl and whisk attachment. This means when I do a recipe that involves making a meringue and folding it into a batter, I don't have to clean out the bowl and whisk to do them separately - I just switch out the bowl and whisk. Second, I bought one of those new scrape-the-bowl-clean paddles. I don't use them for everything, but for certain recipes they are amazingly useful. The one issue with stand mixers is having to scrape the bowl down (no matter what brand of mixer); this attachment completely eliminates that problem. I don't use it every day, but I'm thankful every time I do use it, that I finally spent the $100 (35 yrs ago that was a LOT of $$ for a mixer!) to buy the KA stand mixer....See Morekitchenaid or cuisinart stand mixer
Comments (15)I went through a KitchenAid Artisan in three years, which disappointed me. I did some research, found a local store carrying the DeLonghi (now with as much badge engineering as GM: Kenwood, DeLonghi, Cuisinart, Viking). I talked with them, bought it, brought it home and started a batch of Oatmeal Raisin cookies; it blew a circuit halfway through the batch, where the puny KA would just keep mixing. I called the store (their solution? "Let the mixer rest for 30 minutes and resume." My response, "Mix for five minutes, rest for 30? Really?"), and cleaned the mixer, returned it, and got a refund (after much wrangling). Instead, I bought the KitchenAid 600 Professional, which ran for three years before grinding gears off this morning on a batch of PeanutButter cookies.... My mixer gets used twice a week, usually on desserts, and never get close to bowl capacity, so they're not abused. All of which to say: you can spend $400 for three years of mixing with a KA, or the same for a DeLonghi that shuts down in ten minutes.... The earlier comment about wattage ratings is accurate: it's not about output, but usage. Comments (6)I'd love to post a picture for you, Red, but my spout is either packed away or thrown out, just like everyone else's. As I recall, it doesn't attach per se, it just kind of sits on top and makes a general nuisance of itself. I find pouring from a flexible cutting board works more easily and neatly. Perhaps if I say "no one uses it" a handful of people will show up to prove me wrong. As for the chip, unless it looks like it's going to chip more from that spot, it should be fine, functionally.
